I notice that when I do the single arm drill I have a difficult time going in a straight line (I tend to veer to one side). I do it with my off arm by my side. Should that be a point of focus while doing the drill? Will this help my catch become more efficient by properly directing the power or is that not really the point of the drill. Thanks.
Free or Fly?
I do alot of one-arm free with my other arm at my side and breathing to the opposite side of the arm I'm using. It helps balance my stroke and it helps work on keeping you catch staying on its proper side.
If you are going crooked you may be reaching across the "vertical line" (if you split your body down the middle head to toe).
Freestyle, breathing to the side of the pull. I don't think I'm crossing the vertical line on extension, but I get a sense that I'm pulling myself off track. It may be that when swimming normally you compensate somewhat for a less than north-south pull and I'm seeing it more with this drill.
Interesting that you breathe the other way. You need very good balance to do that.
Make sure that you are also keeping your body position straight with hips in line with your shoulders, as that could also contribute to your difficulty with the drill.

Do you still have alignment problems doing OAD (one arm drill) with a snorkel? This may signify it might be breathing related if it doesn't happen with a snorkel.
