It has become a growing epidemic to close pools. Your voice can make a difference as it has in St. Pete; www.tampabay.com/.../1097648 USA Swimming has done a terrific job dedicating resources and personnel to help facilities best program themselves to become self sustaining. USMS too through our Coach and Club Development program is now providing education and training to aquatics directors and facilities. Together, we are striving to offer programming solutions to help keep more pools open. This is one of the themes of SwimFest; www.usms.org/swimfest. If you want to learn more, we encourage you to attend. If you hear of a facility targeted to be closed, please let us know so we can help. • perhaps, many politicians and many in the public would support pools if they saw them as more than only recreation and saw their potential to improve health, enhance vitality, enhance community and reduce the numbers strolling around shopping malls (sorry merchants) Don't forget about safety. Drowning is a huge cause of accidental death, especially among kids. Pools are the perfect place to teach kids to swim.
  • We face losing a 50 meter pool with a 10 meter diving platform at the SW Pool in Largo, FL due to low revenues and shrinking city budgets. We hope the Largo City Council will have the same courage to just say no to short sighted plans to fill the pools in with dirt or convert to water parks.
