The Morning Swim Show, Rob Butcher on Masters suit regs

The Morning Swim Show, Jan. 26, 2010: Rob Butcher on Masters suit regulations.
  • I bet we will see a lot of very fast youngsters come out of the woodwork to swim masters meets just to wear their suits. Last week here in San Francisco, we had 24-year old swimming stud Andy Grant show up with his Jaked at the Fog City Masters meet, and set the 18-24 record in the 500 free (4:24) and tied the record in the 50 free (20.25). He turns 25 in a week, so he was there for a purpose. Once he realizes he could set the 500 free record for the 25-29 age group, I wouldn't be surprised to see him back.

Someone tell him to come out to Nationals where he can wear a fast suit and swim in an even faster pool.
  • Could someone provide a recap of Rob's comments? My computer doesn't have sound on it. Your computer itself or just the website? The Swimming world video is always on mute until the user changes the volume, if you didn't know that. Rob mentioned something about wearing the suits to be more socially acceptable or something.

He talked about USMS mission of bringing in swimmers, and made the most compelling case I've heard so far for the idea that the coverage and speed boost are good things for masters swimmers and increasing our ranks. Frankly, I always thought that the modesty pitch was a pretty weak argument, but Rob did a good job with it. He revealed himself to be a tech suit supoprter for all levels, including international elites, and opined that NBC's coverage of the Worlds and Duel in the Pool were in part due to the suit issue and the promise of records being broken. He finished by promoting the Atlanta meet, mentioning online registration and encouraging people to sign up early to swim in an Olympic-caliber pool in the fastest suits available. In general, he appeared intelligent, thoughtful, and well-spoken. I thought USMS was very well represented.
