It is in the FINA site, (public release #2) :
Lausanne (SUI) January 16, 2010 – Under the presidency of Dr. Julio C. Maglione, the first 2010 FINA Bureau Meeting took place on January 14-15 in Bangkok (THA) and approved the following main decisions:
.....
14. Swimwear:
....
- Masters: the same swimwear regulations as per pool swimming will be applied from January 1, 2010.
Also in the release we find that:
....
4. Allocation of upcoming FINA events:
....
- FINA World Masters Championships 2012 – Italy (Riccione)
....
That's it people, now let's move ahead.
I wish we could say that it's "over" but if I recall USMS needs to act again.... By the way, what does it mean that Masters swimwear will be the same as "per pool swimming". Isn't "pool swimming" what we do too?
Also, I love how it's the last thing in the release. We're nearly an afterthought!
(I edited my post because as first written, it was unnecessarily inflamatory. No reason to throw fuel on the fire here....)
As I understand it FINA rules are the default position for USMS.Until USMS says differently FINA applies.USMS has already said that this doesn't apply to the 1 hr postal swim but unless USMS says something it applies immediately to other pool events(and evidently has since 1/1/10,so anyone who swam a meet in the first 2 weeks of the year will just have to get their time machine out and go back and swim them in legal suits.)
fina approved the controversial "non textile" suits for OW before they did so for pool competition. i guess the real reasoning for allowing superfluous coverage to continue in OW is that times have little meaning for the most part.
i'm happy that many OW organizations discourage the use of full body suits.
I think FINA made their decision on Masters. Don't we need to wait for USMS decision, or did they say previously whatever FINA says goes? I don't remember.

Here's what was posted on USMS.org on the 15th:
FINA BUREAU CONSIDERS SWIMWEAR RULES FOR MASTERS
The FINA Bureau has considered Masters swimwear rules. The USMS Rules Committee will learn the results shortly and then will immediately reconsider the USMS swimwear rules in cooperation with the USMS Executive Committee. All USMS members will be notified of any changes to USMS swimwear rules and the effective date. Regardless of any changes to the USMS swimwear rules, the June 1, 2009 USMS swimwear interpretations will apply for the duration of the One Hour Postal Swim being conducted in January 2010.
Ugh, this is all so confusing. One question. Aquablade, no arms, no legs, just a plain old suit.
Approved or not? I just bought it and would like to know if I need to return it before I open it.
It depends whether it has a zipper,if so no.Also we need to say if USMS doesn't follow FINA.
If they want to protect them from sunburn and jellyfish then they should let them have their arms covered. The current techsuits provide very little covering of the shoulders and back. I agree 100%. If it was possible, I'd agree even more.
Performance wise, covering the arms makes very little difference at the end of a 40k day of work. However, when having to go through clouds of jellyfishes, it makes the difference between completing the event or being forced to abandon. Right now, unless more progress had been made in this area over the last decade or so, the only way to handle this issue is by spraying the burned area with a solution made of vinegar etc...
Sure there's the heat factor but again there. I've seen 15/16yo young ladies being thrown in a 40k marathon water being little under 60deg. Well, that's insane somehow and allowing them to retain their heat, I'd be very comfortable with this. Usually they have to quit this sort of race before the end (when not covered). The problem is that when they do so, they're already pretty advanced on the hypothermia scale. They may get to the phase where they no longer feel the cold etc. We put a end to this when we realize they can no longer have a conversation or even swim in the right direction.
Jelly fishes burn, but leeches suck. Can take a very long while sometimes to remove them and as a consequence, often swimmers keep them on for a very long while. This too is insane. It's worst than Jelly Fishes.
I wish I could be there for that -- I'm thinking nero legs under old nero full body under new nero full body!
I wonder if Ande will come up and wear his suit collection. He would look like the Michelin man.
