UVa swimmers doing Chinese Qigong

When I swam in college, it was all about yardage and lifting weights. What's up with today's kids? YouTube - How does Qigong improve swimming?
  • That crazy Bernadino... Nice to see former NOVA standout David Wren in the clip.
  • Not a surprise. Whether it's that or Tai Chi or Yoga or TM, the refreshment and relaxation benefits are well known, and well documented. I don't know what shape my back would be in if I didn't do a bit of Yoga (not the power stuff or any of the modern versions) each morning to get loose and relax before the day begins. I sort of remember that TM was used by volleyball teams to relax and focus a number of years ago. Wonder if that ever caught on.
  • Is David an off-spring of one of the Wren brothers from our era? He is the son of masters swimmer Mike Wren, who is brother to former UVa swimmers Andy and Matt. Matt still lives in Richmond; I believe Andy is up in Hershey, PA. David's brother Garrett also currently swims for UVa. So there have been two generations of Wren brothers swimming for Coach Bernadino. I stayed with Andy on my recruiting trip to UVa (I came very close to going to UVa), and we trained together for a summer at the old Starlit team in DC.

  • I stayed with Andy on my recruiting trip to UVa (I came very close to going to UVa), and we trained together for a summer at the old Starlit team in DC. There's an old thread around here somewhere where a few of us reminisced about the Starlit pool. What a dump that place was. I dislike Bernadino, but that's my UNC-bias coming through (and yes, I also almost went to UVA). Their new pool looks much nicer than the old one though.
  • They are nice guys...mostly. Matt was my Physical Therapist after I had knee surgery. All PT-ists have to be closet sadists anyway, but I think he especially delighted in causing me extra pain as payback for the fact that UVa never beat UNC in swimming (dual meet or ACCs) while we were in school. Things are unfortunately different nowadays. I always got along well with Bernadino, even when things got a little heated between him and Frank, and between our two teams. And I'll always root for former NOVA swimmers in college even when they do not have enough wisdom to choose a better school than UVa...

I got to know Andy and Matt during my recruiting trip to UVa. Very nice guys. But that wasn't enough for me to choose to go to school there.
