I think for the casual observer of the sport, butterfly is by far the most impressive feat a swimmer can accomplish in the pool. It makes the swimmer look powerful, and for someone who can't or does not swim regularly, it seems to be the most difficult and foreign stoke to perfect.
I don't know if that makes it "beautiful", but a properly perfected butterfly is nothing short of amazing - to me at least!
