Can anyone tell me a positive reason for doing a double arm backstroke drill? The only thing it seems to be good at for me is hurting my shoulders, so I refuse to do it. When I think about it, I can't come up with any reason why this drill would do you any good anyway. In real backstroke, you are supposed to roll your body from side to side, right? That's a key part of the stroke. When doing a double arm recovery, you can't roll at all. So what is the point?
Whenever a coach assigns this, I just quietly do something else. If they were to try to "encourage" me to do it anyway, I'd tell them what they could do with that idea.

I don't know if it's any good for improving regular backstroke, but a physiotherapist once suggested I do it to relieve "computer back". The idea was to stretch the chest muscles and tighten up the muscles between the shoulder blades.

I don't overreach but I do tend to finnish deep sometimes. When I do double arm back drill I think about finishing well and clean with both arms/hands while maintaining ballance. Plus its an easy fun drill!
There are often more than just one point a swimmer can focus on during a particular drill.
OP: If you're doing it properly and it still hurts your shoulders, STOP!

@RogeRio This style is interesting. Have you considered using a breaststroke kick with it? I am going to try it both ways next time I am in the pool. Thanks!
I also find it hurts my shoulders if I do it too fast. The drill means you can't rotate the body as normal, which can cause shoulder strain. We do it occasionally as a drill but I'll switch to "pinky, thumb pinky" instead. Most of the time we use it as a recovery swim, which means I switch to regular back.
some drills exist for the sake of doing the drill
I think drills should help swimmers swim faster.
If they don't, why do em?
use training time productively

I agree with Leslie here...I used to use this when someone had overreaching problems and to help with the feel of the push past the hips.
If it causes pain...don't do it.

I did 300 yards of it today in between my primary sets. I think I might like it over regular backstroke if I have problems in open water. I need to try it a few more times to get used to it.
