Michael Phelps and a bong? Is there any truth to this?

are we sure that's Phelps? If true, he seems to have a habit of screwing up in the very next Novembers after Olympics... anyone here from the UK? How reputable is "news of the world"? How could he be so careless?
  • He always seem to take upfront when he doesn't something wrong. First, when he got his DUI, before it was the thing to you with celebrities and now this. I hope that his endorsers don't drop him because if they do, the Kobe Bryant needs to lose his endorsements deals as well. Look, he messed up but he didn't harm anyone like some Pro Athletes harm hotel workers or Pitbulls or wives/baby mamas. These people don't lose their endorsements. Well, Michael Vick probably lost everything down to his last pair of underwear. Is this story going to be the lead on the cable news networks for the next few weeks? Is this story overshadows the Super Bowl, then Phelps has mainstreamed swimming into the national spotlight. When Gary Hall, Jr failed for pot, I don't think that it was the top story on any national news program.
  • We all know he's probably the best swimmer ever but is certainly prone to massive errors in judgment, at best. Of course, your profile pic does not constitute an error in judgment. (
  • Really, it's unfortunate, but how many very successful money-making young male athletes out there don't make stupid and impulsive decisions a lot of the time? Thinking it's rare for pro athletes out there to party or smoke dope or date strippers is naive. That doesn't make it admirable or smart. It does make it less than totally shocking. I know we'd like to think swimming is different, but I'm not sure it is...
  • Poor guy, and only 14 Olympic golds and $20 million to cheer him up. He'll be fine, his rep will be fine, and swimming will be fine in about 3 months. Good to know he's human. What athletes don't party like rockstars? I'll bet it was Pineapple Express.:wine:
  • Didn't hurt Arnold smoking a joint in pumping iron, he even became the Presidential Physical Fintness guy. I also liked the comment "milk is for children, I drink beer". I like that, but don't like the first.
  • I really feel bad for the guy. It has got to get old living your life under a microscope. For his own sake, I hope there is a consequence to this that will lead to him making changes in his lifestyle. The embarrassment from the DUI didn't do it. The last thing that I would want to see is for Michael to end up like Len Bias.
  • :confused:I just read on Yahoo that Michael is not denying the accusations, and he says he is sorry to have disappointed everyone, especially his Mom. He further states he is just a 23 year old and he made a bad decision. He said he will never do anything like this again! I give the kid credit for being honest (he may regret it when his sponsors are through w/him). As a mom of 1 current and 2 other former teen-agers I will say he could have done a lot worse. I seriously doubt he has a drug problem at this point, and maybe this unfortunate situation will serve to remind him that his super-star status brings alot of responsibility with it. I think Michael Phelps did a great job handling himself, the stress, and all the publicity during the Olympics. I felt he represented himself and USA Swimming as a true champion. I hope he/his reputation makes it through this situation; even superstars deserve a little understanding. Good luck Michael.

I do think he deserves a little understanding as well, but he needs to change his lifestyle before he goes down the road to even more reckless behavior. People that die of an overdose of cocaine start out with milder things such as alcohol and pot. Michael may never go down the road towards even more risky behavior, but the fact that he was as reckless as he was, knowing that he is under the microscope, is a red flag. Self-destructive behavior leads to more self-destructive behavior.
