Michael Phelps and a bong? Is there any truth to this?

are we sure that's Phelps?
If true, he seems to have a habit of screwing up in the very next Novembers after Olympics...
anyone here from the UK? How reputable is "news of the world"?
How could he be so careless?
Wow, so I guess you never made a mistake huh? Never desrved a second chance?
Judgemental much? Wishing bad things for people just because they made a mistake that, I might add, didn't cause harm to ANYONE, is not nice at all.
Yeah, these tabloids call Phelps a dope and everything under the sun but I am sure that these editors of these tabloids don't have a clean image themselves and then, they go pass judgment on these celebs. Look, the guy is not raping hotel staff so I think that the media needs to move on with more important issues in our society. No, it is not Jolie walking through an airport with her 55 kids.
It kind of sucks for Phelps because the minute that he can have some fun in his life, it becomes a media firestorm. The guy had to be an adult when he was 15 when he made his first Olympic team. Also, could some of the food in his diet be more harmful than the material that was in that bong. I am just saying.
Wow, so it was really him... camera phones must be the worst thing that ever happened to public figures like Michael. I wonder if there's going to be any sponsor fall out?
I'm also curious how mainstream the story goes. It's breaking during arguably the biggest American sporting event of the year. I would think most of the news outlets would be more concerned with the Superbowl and everything that goes with it than a fuzzy picture of Phelps smoking out.
Well, I am impressed. He took responsibility. Doesn't matter if it was before or after the story broke. He could have just kept denying it, but he didn't.
IMO, he should not be banned from competition. Marijuana is NOT a performance enhancing drug. In addition, he is on a vacation from training and competing. This is not a "serious" violation, IMO. We will just have to wait and see.
I think it is sad that celebrities have no hope of living a normal life.
Didn't Gary Hall Jr. get banned for testing positive for marijuana? Phelps hasn't failed a drug test ... yet.
I don't remember the specifics, but that does sound familiar.
But that is the difference. Michael hasn't failed a drug test. He wasn't even training at the time, much less competing. If he failed a drug test, then that is a different story.
I think Michael did something really stupid. It is just that I feel for him because we all have done something stupid at one point or another, but our mistakes were not fodder for the whole world to pass judgement on. As far as mistakes go, this is pretty minor, IMO.
I think it is sad that celebrities have no hope of living a normal life.
If by "living a normal life" you mean smoking pot at a college party, that is a true statement. The reality is that his achievement made him much more than juxt a celebrity--almost an iconic world figure. Several years I read that Neil Armstrong felt a tremendous sense of responsibility having been the first man on the moon. He recognized that he was immediately an historic but still living person, and he realized that he had to live his life accordingly. Have you ever read that he so much as received a speeding ticket in the forty years since the moon landing? He rarely gives interviews or makes public appearances.
