Napping poll

Just curious how many of you take naps. Personally, I love to take long naps whenever I can. On nights I don't swim I usually take a two hour nap when I get home from work. On days when I work from home I'll usually nap if I've got at least an hour of free time before I have to leave for the pool. This does cause me to miss workouts on occasion when I don't feel like getting up! I also like to take two hour naps in the afternoon on weekends when possible, even though I usually get eight hours of sleep or more on the weekend. As you might have guessed, I don't have any children! I know some people rarely if ever nap and others prefer much shorter naps. How about you?
  • occasionally, I'll go back to bed for an hour after the kids go to school hehe :bed: I do this sometimes as well! :) It's the night owl approach to napping or prolonging your nighttime sleep. I never nap. Naps are contra-indicated for insomniacs. And I don't have time during the day anyway. Very occasionally, on weekends, I will lay down and shut my eyes for 20-30 minutes and rest. I never fall asleep though. When I was younger I could nap anywhere anytime, but I seem to have lost this talent.

It definitely has a lot to do with the amount of training I'm doing! I'm doing a lot of yards at the moment and seem to need about 1-2 more hours of sleep every day, whether it be in the form of a nap of just sleeping in. Between the kids and the dog, an afternoon nap is rarely an option. So, occasionally, I'll go back to bed for an hour after the kids go to school hehe :bed:

I find that it's hard to fall asleep at night with a TV on, but it's equally hard to fall asleep for a nap with the TV off. The best weekend nap inducing is golf, because the voices are soothing. The best weekday nap inducing fare is CNBC market coverage, because those guys do know how to drone on! quote] Man, same phenomenon here: I hate the tv on at night but it's required for napping. And yes, golf is basically telecast benadryl. Those with hi-def cable, check out the show "Sunrise Earth." It induces major weekend narcolepsy. It was on the demo TVs at Best Buy recently, and I almost went down right on the linoleum.
  • I love to nap and can almost precisely time a 20 minute nap when I do without even trying. My challenge is that I rarely find/make the time to do so. I have that same ability. I will lay my head down and say to myself, Wake up in 20 minutes, and it's amazing how exact the awakening is. I must say this poll has been very encouraging to me--I thought I was the only groggy person I knew! Carlos, I will attempt your formula. I sleep 8-9 hours, split the difference, 8.5. Cut this in half: 4.25 Go to bed at midnight to 1, split the difference 12:30 Add the 4.25: 4:45 So my nap should ideally be, say, 4:30-5:00. This would give me a little time to wake up, get rid of the sleep inertia, and make it to swim practice perhaps turbocharged with a cup of coffee. Naturally, I tend to nap a little earlier--maybe 3 or so. Maybe I should keep nap time the same, but try to go to bed a little earlier? I find that it's hard to fall asleep at night with a TV on, but it's equally hard to fall asleep for a nap with the TV off. The best weekend nap inducing is golf, because the voices are soothing. The best weekday nap inducing fare is CNBC market coverage, because those guys do know how to drone on! Final question: does your need to nap, for me it can feel like a sexual hunger to be seduced into sleep, hence the very nice recreational component, but anyhow, does your need to nap have anything to do with the amount of training you are doing? It seems like I have been swimming a lot of yardage lately, avearging 3250 a day for 10 days straight, missing only MLK day. I have definitely felt more urge to nap lately, too.
  • I will sleep when I'm dead That was the title of great song by Warren Zevon. Warren's sleeping now.
  • Late afternoon, after a gym workout is my best time to nap.
  • Warren's sleep philosophy notwithstanding, who can really best the great Heinrich Heine who wrote in his poem Morphine: Sleep is good: and Death is better, yet Surely never to have been born is best.

I rarely feel the need to nap, because I get enough sleep at night. But when I am really tired at the end of the work day or on a weekend day after a late night before, a 20 minute nap on the couch is the greatest thing ever. I've always thought that the freedom to lie down in a comfortable spot whenever you're feeling tired is the greatest luxury in the world. (A luxury that a few billion folks don't have, unfortunately.) Anything else we might strive for - cars, houses, vacations - pale in comparison.

You just keep thinking those happy thoughts, Jim. Best TV Benedryl for me is football, especially college ball which I care nothing about. Puts me out like a light.
