  • You can find a YMCA team to attach to and swim in Y Nationals. It's just is a matter of talking to the right people, getting on a team that will help "attach" you, and also understanding the special requirements (ie, membership requirements, insurance issue, and be willing to pay the additional cost to join a Y team, and let's not forget that relatively steep and early deadline for meet entry for Y Nationals). Just look at prior years results. You will see very recognizable "USMS" masters swimmers, often swimming for teams completely in other states. I totally get it. If you are willing to get your Y status as well as USMS, then you can get 6 swims at USMS nationals and 8, yes, 8, individual swims at Y nationals. Plus they count for USMS top ten. There are many reasons to do both - certainly racking up top tens is a common theme - holy cow - 8 events plus a plateful of relays - you totally get your money's worth! Other reasons are as mentioned above, such as "true" Y swimmers, or just can't make the dates of USMS nationals, and/or geographic reasons.
