  • Must have been the B70:) Nope. The kid is swimming in a ratty old jammer. Jose is one of those rare/gifted people who has an innate "feel" for the water in spite of growing up a soccer player...he's incredibly powerful as well. He's also subsribed to Coach Rankin's strategy of quality over quantity and the resuts speak for themselves. When we get this kid to figure out how to do starts/turns and put a B70 on him he'll be 21 low/47+ range!
  • Legend has it that Rowdy Gaines never swam until his Jr. year in high school and the first time he ever raced, did a 23 in the 50. This statement is FALSE. Rowdy swam for a summer swim club team until he was 10 years old. It was not AAU or USS swimming but it was the typical summer club league swimming. I have proof of this because I have a USS Swimming calendar from 1992 and he was featured in one of the months and it shows a picture of him at 10 years old at a swim meet. You are correct in that he started back to swimming in his Jr. year of High School swimming for Winter Haven HS and just missed making an All American HS selection. He was 2nd at his State Championship to a swimmer named Steve Allbritton from Clearwater HS and swims masters at the present time in Florida with Randy Nutt. In his senior year he really improved to where he was one of the top high school swimmers in the country. He went undefeated in all his high swim meets for Winter Haven except the Florida State Championship were he was upset by a swimmer named Donald Hornby in the 100 Yard Free in what was a classic race. Hornby won with a time of :45.74 to Gaines is :45.92 and Donald Hornby was from Nova HS and was on the team with USMS masters swimmer and Open Water Man of the Year Randy Nutt. Donald Hornby was a Jr. at the time and ended up swimming for Alabama. Gaines went to Auburn and the rest of his story his history. It interesting to note that Rowdy's time in the 100 Free this weekend was .67 seconds from his HS time. In the 200 Free he was 2.62 seconds from his HS time.

I think that Rowdy would say that he swam summer league. But, there are some people that will put it out there that since they didn't do winter swimming until high school, they will say "Oh, I didn't start swimming until high school!" Geesh, that is so great to hear when you have been doing winter swimming since before you knew what winter swimming was!!! Be honest and stay you did summer swimming since you were ten. Also, you are never going to hear a distance swimming go from nothing to something special from 9th to 11th grade. It is always those sprinters and breaststrokers(ie Ed Moses).

Wow, i'm wondering how non-swimmer could get so fast in 9 months plus get water feeling well. Often, i observed that most non-swimmers don't have specific water feeling, and it comes with years of swimming. I just have to say, he is talented sportsmen, who managed to be really fast compared with my times on those events. Is there any secrets that we could use?:) Legend has it that Rowdy Gaines never swam until his Jr. year in high school and the first time he ever raced, did a 23 in the 50.

I have to include my college coach, Keith Switzer, and his 500/1000 Free. He was going for the Nat'l record for the 500 during the 1000 Free since he can't stay until the last day to do the 500. So he missed the record, but still went 4:43 (at age 46) and STILL managed to float the next 150 or so and win the 1000 by 9 seconds!:applaud: So, some poor slob presumably busted his butt the entire race (doing a masters PR by 29 seconds in this case) and still finished 9 seconds behind a guy who was basically warming down the last 500?
