My comment about Jim Thorton being in the Eastern Media::D led me to wonder how many Forumites are on the E Coast as it seems lots of Y'all run into each other at meets. So where are you from. Also,I know many of you want to remain anonymous, but I'd like more people to fill out their profile.People talk about how they did at a meet, but without a name I can't look them up.

I voted for Northeast . . . although my assigned zone is Great Lakes.
for the record, I live 1/2 mile from the famous (or at least in his own mind) Jim T. - so whatever he checks will work for me too. Trust me - it's not an easy burden to bear . . .
i modified my profile so that all these posts don't show up if someone is to google me. it is in no way an attempt to remain anonymous.

The rural South. There is an owl out in my woods behind the house I can hear at night. I can also hear coyotes howling at night in the woods that run along the big cotton field across the street. On Christmas Day last year, my neighbor's three roosters found their way into my yard and were crowing. They seemed oblivious to the barking of my two large dogs in the pen.
The nearest gas station is 3 miles away and the nearest grocery store is about 6 miles away. The public library is actually closer than the grocery store. I live 1/4 mile away from two rural churches. The closest Wal-Mart is 10 miles away.
The nice thing is that there is a 25 yard indoor pool within 8 miles and an outdoor 25 meter pool within 5 miles. The nearest LC pool is 1.5 hours away, so I rarely get the chance to practice LC.
People are very friendly out in the country, but also know when to respect your privacy. It is, overall, a pleasant place to live.
Live in Oakland, work in San Mateo. I swim mostly at an outdoor pool in San Mateo and sometimes on the weekends spring for the 3 bucks to swim in an outdoor pool in Oakland. I recently discovered that a pool in Berkeley offers stroke coaching for 6 bucks on Saturday mornings, so I might give that a try.
We at Manatee Aquatic Masters have coaching, trees, birds, and great teammates up at Holy Names University in Oakland. Come check us out!
Won't happen, though, Mr. Fort is opposed and dreams of living in the Raleigh/Durham area. That probably won't happen for him though, as I am just not a southern bell. :D
RDU/RTP area is a far cry from your traditional southern areas. Cary is known as the Containment Area for Relocated Yankees and has or had the highest per capita of PhDs in the world. Not to mention, a great USMS team and that super sweet pool. However, I'm in no rush to move back there.
My bro moved to AZ (lives in Cave Creek) and we can't get him back home. I guess the greater Phoenix area is a great place, I do enjoy visiting a lot. I don't think living in such close proximity to Smith would be a bonus, however.
I've mulled this "where to live" thing over many times. DC/Northern Virginia is lovely in the fall and spring. BUT it's a horrible allergy inducing, allergy suffering, swamp! Having grown up and been educated in MN, NH and IL, I'm over cold weather. So the best place to go is clearly Arizona. :) Won't happen, though, Mr. Fort is opposed and dreams of living in the Raleigh/Durham area. That probably won't happen for him though, as I am just not a southern bell. :D
You don't have to worry about being a Southern belle unless you live in South Carolina, Georgia (at least an hour outside of Atlanta), Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, or the panhandle of Florida.
North Carolina is probably the fastest growing, most progressive state on the East Coast. It has much to offer - excellent public and private universities, warm weather, beaches, and mountains. In the South, we refer to Ashville as the Aspen, Colorado of the East Coast. Lots of independently wealthy people who enjoy the outdoors can be found in the area around Ashville.
