In 2007, I swam 2 Masters meets, 2 meets against the kiddies and our Club Championships as well as 3 OW races.
In 2008, I have been to 3 Masters Meets, 3 meets against the kiddies, 3 OW races and I have our Club Championship in 3 weeks.
In 2009, I plan on swimming in 3 Masters Meets, 4 meets against the kiddies and 7 OW races. (4 in one weekend, then 3 over the course of 4 weeks).
I average 24 meets per year - both AMYMSA (YMCA League) and USMS meets. I'll swim SCM, SCY & LCM . . . not a fan of OW (horrible sense of direction - I need the line markings)
I have only swum 2 meets in 2008 so far. One SCM and one LCM. We only have one all-Masters meet in Taiwan each year. For the rest we have to fit in with the kids. There were five such opportunities this year but I could only make it to one. Problem is, due to time constraints, we are always limited to participating in 2 events. Bit of a bummer. I really envy the amount of competition opportunities you guys have in the States.
Will have at least 18 meets by years end + 3OW
Raced:
10650 SCY so far (1 SCY meet to go, dist TBD)
1850 SCM so far (1 SCM meet to go w/ 3200 to go)
2150 LCM so far
+ 8.4mi OW
through 16 meets, that is racing 8.54 miles, for an average of about 940 race yards per meet.
Fort: Ah, but....unlike you speedy coordinated people:
1. I will never get caught doing a backstroke start in public.
2. Fly over 40 yds is rated NC-18 for violence and grief.
3. My reaction times are so slow, the fewer starts the better. 29 dives/starts in one year? ayechihuahua
Guess I was stoking a discussion about how difficult and interesting it is to compare the number of races, on a certain level, vs. seeing how often folks are comfortable participating in events. My friend Jay always says go to every meet, it's all good, don't fool yourself thinking too much about the past. Others of us have guilt complexes that only allow for PBs or handwringing.

but my faster-twitch friends really load up on events and are constantly rushing to the blocks while I laze around trying piano removal techniques.
What?! Not me, as a fast-twitch sprinter, I need rest between events. I can only remember rushing to the blocks for one relay at Zones.
I did a quick total. I would bet I have one of the lowest yardage totals for meets. In 8 meets so far, assuming my memory is accurate, I've swum 29 individual events totaling 2050 yards/meters. I've swum 6 relays (maybe more, can't remember) totaling 350 yards/meters. I have another 200 meters ahead of me. You probably do that in one meet, Dave!
I only went to 3 OW competitions this year for a total of 5 races (Meet 1: 5 miles. Meet 2: 200 yards, 500 yards and 2 miles - I did all 3 races back-to-back with about 5 minutes between each. Meet 3: 1500 meters in a triathlon relay). I usually try to get in 7-9 races, but things have been a bit rocky in the last 2 years or so and getting to races has been a challenge.
No pool meets planned.

Would it be interesting to ask what total distance people raced in a given year?
(the sum of all of your race distances)
For me so far this year, for instance:
1500 LCM
2675 SCY
9.85 miles OW
12.39 miles total (but only 17 dives from the blocks!)
Might be interesting to see how intensity levels could compare. When I go to meets, I tend to favor the long races, and do fewer events, but my faster-twitch friends really load up on events and are constantly rushing to the blocks while I laze around trying piano removal techniques.
