Wow, I just went thru them and I'm at 12 right now for 2008 with a 13th in 3 weeks. It's an illness apparently.
Both Nationals, a meet 4 hours away, one 2 hours away, 7 local Masters meets and one USA meet. Plus the Masters meet in 3 weeks in Chicago.
Right now I'm at 5 for this year with 1, possibly 2, more meets to do. Generally I swim 2 meets in the spring and 3 in the fall. This past year I also did 2 LCM meets, which was a first for me.
For 2008:
1 SCY @ SPMA's UCLA Meet
1 LCM @ SPMA's Regionals at Cal Luth
1 SCM @ IGLA Washington, DC
1 SCM @ SPMA's UCLA Meet
So 4 for 2008 with one more SCM for SPMA's SCM Regionals in Long Beach.
That is around my yearly meet entries. Usually between 3 and 5 per year.
This year, I did 10 meets. With the SCM Meters meet next weekend and SCM Zones at Rutgers, my total will be 12. I haven't done any USA meets, maybe next year if I can get the qualifying times. .
This year, I swam in alll three Pacific Master championship meets--SCY, LCM and SCM. I would love to swim in more meets but don't have the time. Next year, I'm hoping to swim in a few more meets. One day, I'd like to swim in a USA-S meet again...
I hit my all time high for meets this year: 9!! Lucked out because SCY Zones, LC Zones and the IGLA Champs were all local.

1 local USA LC meet (1 day)

4 SCY meets (1 local, 1 travel meet in NC to battle Geek, 1 Zones, 1 Nationals)
1 SCM Zones in NJ coming in Dec --one day "away pass" only)

Don't feel bad on doing 13 or more. There is someone in my age group who is at about 20 pool meets for the year.
Including USA-S meets, I think I will be at 8 by the end of the year. That's with missing 2 USMS meets that I wanted to do due to family things. I did 1 Nationals - LC. Usually I don't do any Nats.
This year:
3 open water swims, 2-5.85 miles each
1 Zones meet (SC)
1 Nationals (LC)
4 local meets (all SC)
9 competitions total.
Will add 2 more OWs next year (The Bay + Montclair), perhaps 1-2 more local meets. Between work, travel, family, vacations it's hard to get time to peak and recover. A good recession might make this more possible, but with the downside potential as well. Did a combo family vacation and Nats this summer, worked well, depends on where the Nats is - Portland = great, Indianapolis = ??

I didn't swim any meets in 2008. I'm hoping to get back into the postal swim routine in 2009. Do you count them as "meets"? I did the full set in both 2005 and 2007.
Part of my issue with meets (or planned bike rides) is I simply don't like to drive long distances to "work out". If I can walk or ride to the event there's a much better chance I might attend.
