Sat Dec 4th, 2015 Clark Smith broke Erik Vendt's 8:36.49 American Record in the 1,000 yard freestyle when he raced the 1,650 finals at the UT Invite in Austin, TX with a time of 8:33.93. Since he did it as part of a 1,650, for his time to count, he just needed to legally finish the race.
