love swimming but each time i go home after swim, I have runny nose and it is clogged-can't breathee. Tried clear water spray-no help. When i don't swim on Sunday my nose is ok. I suspect i'm alergic to chemicals in pool. Anynone has similar reaction? Do you take any medications? do you have to take everytime you go for a swim? is there a way to get out of this problem?
I have sheduled visit to a doctor next week-this issue must me solved, cause i ain't quitting swimming.
Thanks for info

...each time i go home after swim, I have runny nose and it is clogged-can't breathee.
I have also developed a similar problem. Never had it before but now when I get back from the pool (and it seems to get worse in the evenings) I have these sneezing fits. I can sneeze up to twenty times in a row. It gets so bad that my chest hurts. My nose streams and the more I blow it the worse it gets. It seems to be exacerbated when I swim butterfly. I suspect that this is because it is easier for water to be forced into the sinuses when swimming butterfly.
Funny thing is, although this has been going on for a while, I only recently suspected chlorine. I thought it might be the cats, house dust, air pollution, the changing of the seasons, etc. It was only when I hurt my arm three weeks ago and didn't swim for two weeks and didn't sneeze at all, that I started to suspect the pool. The day I went back for my first swim I got really bad congestion and had one of the worst sneezing fits I have ever had.
I know there was a thread pertaining to this a while back but I can't seem to find it. Would appreciate it if anyone could point me in the right direction. In the meantime I googled "chlorine allergy" and came up with some useful links.
There doesn't seem to be a lot that can be done about it. I get relief from mentholatum rub applied below the nose. It is usually fine by the next morning. I am hoping that it is something that the body acclimatizes to and gets over ( a bit like people get over eczema ). Check out this link.
Here is an excerpt:
Many people develop stuffy nose after swimming in a public pool. This is commonly called swimmer's sinusitis is caused by getting water into the sinuses. The best treatment for swimmer's sinusitis is to drink plenty of water to keep the mucus thin and allow the sinusitis to drain properly. Some people find that using a nasal spray after swimming will also relive some of the symptoms. If the problem continues then see a healthcare professional because a persistent sinus infection could lead to a more serious problem.
Another treatment for the swimmer's sinusitis is to use Eucalyptus or olbas oil in boiling water and inhale the steam that is being generated. This treatment is also very good for any type of stuffy nose due to a cold, flu or allergy problems. Both readily diffuse into the air and can provide benefits to nasal and bronchial areas.

Several years ago I suffered with the same symptoms, runny nose and sneezing. One girl in our club always wore a nose-clip. I asked her why. Her reply, "Because if I don't, I have a runny nose and I'm sneezing all next day."
I tried a nose-clip and the cure was instant! I've always wore one since and never had the slightest problem. This is when often training three times a day.

I discovered the same thing. The nose clip cures it. Buy one of the "synchro style" clips that doesn't have a cord attached to it. See photo here:

or here:

The first style stays on even when diving off the blocks. I use the second style for day-to-day training because it seems to last a lot longer. (With the first style, the rubber eventually gets sticky and gunky.)
My team used to swim from 8:30 - 9:30pm. I'd go home from practice and soon after go to bed. As soon as I laid down, my sinuses would be so stuffed up that I couldn't breathe.
I assumed that I must be allergic to chlorine. I went to an allergist who told me that because of its molecular structure, chlorine is not an allergen. BUT, it is an irritant. If you have mild allergies to anything else, you might not normally notice them but when you introduce an irritant into your sinus cavities all of a sudden the allergies become apparent.
He put me on a couple of different drugs which did the trick, but I didn't really want to continue taking so many prescription medications for the rest of my life. I tried the nose clip and it worked as well as the drugs. (And at $3.00 a pop, they're much cheaper than drugs!)

in my career there are only a few pools that game me similar problems. If i showered in the locker room after the practice, i was fine, but if i just went home afterwords i was miserable all day.. Dunno if ur pool has locker rooms, but i would utilize the shower, and try to get as much of the chemicals out of ur skin and hair before u leave. If not, the best thing you can do is either use a sink or a hose at the pool and shower right when u get home. Bottom line if ur allergic to chemicals in the pool, and your letting them dry into ur hair and skin, ur gonna have allergic reactions all day
Two words: NOSE CLIP. I started using one to stay under water longer on backstroke dolphins, the clearer sinuses was an unexpected benefit. I think the chlorine flush just makes the tissue swell up in there. Also I have much better backstroke starts and turns.
