that is a shame. I feel bad because she has the fastest female 1500 ever but no one outside the swimming community knows that she is a faster distance swimmer than Janet Evans.

Can anybody explain why there is no women's 1500m or men's 800m? What is the reasoning?
Is there a reason that makes sense? No. But because women are weaker (riiiiiiight) they can't swim a 1500 (riiiiiight). And because Men are stronger they can, but there's no reason to have 2 distance races since the 800 is pratically the same as the 1500, so women swim the 800, men swim the 1500.
There you go. That's about the only reason I can think of.

Has the IOC or whatever the appropriate governing body is ever provided an explanation?
I haven't looked at the prelim results yet and I am absolutely crushed by this news. She didn't taper for Trials and now what the heck happened here.
:(
The reason is that there are already some 32 swimming events and the IOC feels that this is enough. Maybe they will add the 800/1500 and the 50s, but with the drive to limit the amount of overall athletes, I don't see it happening.
Ziegler seemms really out of it - 4:09 is not just missing the final, that is a very bad swim. They will go out faster than that in the 800...
