anyone have opinions on which is better for training? Starting to get back into swimming and need advice....
  • Zoomers are probably better if you want to work on timing in free or back.I never use them,I like long fins for the reasons Fort said as well as the fact they put less strain on your shoulders if that is a factor. Also if you want to work on breaststroke pull/dolphin kick long fins are definitely better.

There are a number of reasons why I don't tend to use fins. Two reasons are pretty simple: knees and ankles. As in, fins sometimes put too much strain on my knees (which hyperextend a lot and are otherwise fragile after multiple surgeries) and after a while they hurt my ankles (which are already flexible enough). - quote from a member, but I messed it up a bit please allow patience while I figure out the methods for quoting- Most Fins create undue stress because the fins incorporate a closed foot pocket. Slim Fins www.forcefin.com/.../slim_product.htm have a patented open toe pocket and therefore don't allow the ankle to go past the normal range of motion that cause stress, cramps and strain. www.forcefin.com/.../Truth_Swim2.html I have seen a lot of people use Slims Fins as a method to increase recovery after an injury and as an aid to help in body position and workout enhancement!

If you choose to use Zoomers... T-Slug briefly mentioned this... Buy the red zoomers if you have a strong kick, strong and flexible ankles. Buy the blue ones if you are a weak kicker. Have fun!

Another thing about Zoomers is that they don't float. After a while it starts to feel like kicking with two bricks attached to your feet. (good, propulsive bricks) I think they strengthen the lower back, and promote a good legs-up body position which translates well to full stroke swimming.
  • Hi, as I'm somewhat new to the training thing, can someone explain to me what benefit I would get using fins over sans fins? I've read about improved ankle flexibility, but are stretching exercises as effective? Do they work needed muscles better? One of my biggest problems is establishing rhythm (coordinating stroke and kick), and someone here mentioned that they may help with that. Could someone expound?
