Is it not reasonable to say they did not improve enough or train hard enough to be the winner?
I don't think so. Not at this level when the races are this close--.01 second separating second from third in the women's 100 ***.
Fort - why feel bad because someone is not ready to win?

I am the only one who should feel sorry if I don't win. Why should anyone else care?
It is called breaks of the game.
I would argue that quite often, no amount of training is going to get you on the team. Consider the teammates of these Olympians who swim the same workouts but can't swim the same times in a race.
They showed about 5 seconds of the 100 free. :bitching: Is that because MP decided to scratch?
Well, tomorrow night it looks like they'll televise the 50.
Wouldn't surprise me, seeing as that is what they are structuring the whole coverage around, or so it seems at least. Did they show the swim off at least? Because that is swimming at its finest right there, the swim-off.
I wish I could have seen the entire semi race of Lezak lowering the AR again in 100 Free. He must have gotten ticked off that his AR was lowered after him in prelims and used that as fuel for his semi swim. He is so close to the WR... what an amazing week. I think the Americans are going to take back that 400 Free Relay gold in Beijing.
Isn't he 32? WOW!!!
.
I thought Lochte looked shocked too. Not upset or mad, just in disbelief...
I noticed that Lochte and Bal were wearing full suits. Piersol had legskins ...and so did the second place Goliath.
It looked as if Lochte got bound up under the flags compared to Piersol who went wild on those last few meters.
I wonder if the full suit caused any restriction when it became time to wail away?
Lochte normally swims backstroke with just the legskins.
"If Aaron wins and breaks the World Record at these Olympic Trials and then does a repeat performance in August at the Olympics winning both events, then they are going to start talking about him as one of the greatest, if not the greatest backstroker in swimming history."
If one holds the world records and is the Olympic champion at both distances, how can he be only "one of the greatest." Wouldn't he be, by definition, "the greatest?"
