Is it not reasonable to say they did not improve enough or train hard enough to be the winner?
I am the only one who should feel sorry if I don't win. Why should anyone else care?

I would argue that quite often, no amount of training is going to get you on the team. Consider the teammates of these Olympians who swim the same workouts but can't swim the same times in a race.
