Tums before you swim will work in some cases.
Last choice - surgery to correct the problem. Swimming is the opposite of everything they tell you for acid reflux. Don't lie down for 2 hours after eating. Prop up the head of your bed, etc. When you swim, you're prone, then every 25 yards you turn upside down to flip turn.
I decided to have surgery and have never regretted the decision.

I have definitely thought about surgery. Thanks for the info. Who do you consult about that surgery?
Right now, in the meatime, I am going to try and avoid eating within two hours of my workout time and am going to take Tagament in the morning and evening. I used to use Pepcid before swimming, even kept a bunch in my bag.
just out of curiousity...have you tested doing other things after eating? Like running or rowing?
I was able to isolate the few things that gave me stomache problems while swimming. Orange juice and anything fried.
I just had the same thing today. I think I've had a touch of it before, but I upped my yards about 1k today, and I'm feeling the burn now. Started about 20 min in.
One good remedy for heartburn is a slug of vinegar - doesn't taste great but works in about 10 seconds. Not sure if I want to try this prior to a workout, but maybe afterward. Maybe right NOW. I use regular white vinegar, the apple cider vinegar is 100 times worse to get down.
I think my issue has SOMETHING to do with the amount of water I swallow every day in the pool. It's not good:shakeshead:
It is important to keep reflux to a minimum so that other problems do not develop over long period of times, erosions, cancers etc.
If you are having bad reflux it should be evaluated by your doctor if it continues for a period of time so that you do not get other health problems as you age. The FDA suggests no more than 14 days of self medication. Now that I am past the disclaimer...
The best treatment without seeing a doctor is to take Prilosec or the generic every day. Prilosec will reduce the amount of acid production and lower the incidence of symptoms. Also you should keep a record of the episodes that you have and the triggers if known. If you find your symptoms not abating then you should contact your doctor for further evaluation. Taking Prilosec every day is important because once you feel the symptoms it is going to take several days to gain control of the acid production. It also will take time to heal the damaging effects that the acid production has already caused.
When it comes to food it is best to limit food intake before swimming. Everyone is different as to which foods will set off an incident so trial and error is the best perdictor of which foods to limit.
Hope this helps every one.
