I recently got a copy of the document attached below and it astounded me. I know that there is widespread disagreement and rancor on this Discussion Forum but I was completely unaware how far up the chain it went.
Sad day for USMS indeed.

Anybody got a calendar? :joker:
I was an astronomer before becomming a swim bum and was, therefore, a slave to GMT. If you'll check, you'll find that it was already the appropriate date GMT.
Sorry, it only works in your timezone. I have worked in Zulu time on many computer systems, but the day only starts in your timezone !!!
Wow Mel, you just got that? I'm surprised it didn't get there sooner as the passing vote occurred right after convention last year. We're just doing well at keeping secrets, I guess.

Can you explain the difference between GMT and UTC to me? I get in pedantic arguments with people when we discuss whether to set a machine's time zone to GMT or UTC. I say in the computing world it makes no difference.
My understanding is that they are almost identical except GMT is based on observed noon (sun directly overhead) in Greenwich, England, and UTC is the one that occasionally gets leap seconds added to it. Of course this is where you get into arguments with people about things like the earth's orbit is elliptical and not spherical, the earth is not a sphere, it's an oblate spheroid, etc.

The earth is not a sphere; it's flat. How else could the swimming pools stay filled? ;)
