Why are Sullivan, Bernard, Cielo, and Trickett so fast?

I thought it would be good to discuss Why (or how) are Sullivan, Bernard, Cielo, and Trickett so fast? I thought this would make an interesting discussion get into the details Ande

Perhaps the question we should be asking, is why are we so slow.

Does anyone think a 15 year old would use the PEDs www.healthycompetitiontn.org/.../what_are_peds.shtm From what I've seen of PEDs, they're ineffective unless controlled by ppl that know what they're doing. Guys "researching" by asking their pill-popping buddies who just so happen to deal as well... end up wasting their time, money and bodies. The 2 guys that I swam w/ that were juiced did it this way and were eventually worse swimmers because of it. I don't have a science background, but it just seems to me that a teenage body is just too unpredictable b/c of the changes going on. If a kid is showing elite potential, it's best to let them grow on their own before trying to supplement their training through illegal means. In short, I can't see a physician/chemist administering a PED program on a teenager. Not to say that it doesn't happen, but in swimming PED tend to be used by athletes that have reached a plateau and/or have already reached an elite (say... top 15) level.

i was at a meet with phelps when he was 12, and he was a freak even then. not like when he was 15 i guess, but still pretty darn impressive.

Regarding Phelps, Gary Hall has stated that there are ppl that whisper about Phelps... But Phelps was an Olympian at age 15. He didn't come out of nowhere. His turns are out of this world. That just doesn't seem chemically-induced. I assume that this is a continuation of your tongue-in-cheek comments from the other thread? For the record I think Phelps is clean but the way he stayed under water for more than ten meters off each turn, without any sign of negative consequences, on his way to smashing one of the least-soft WRs in the books was hardly a counter-indication of PED use.

Gosh, in the 1960's Steve Clark's physique was weight lifter in every respect. He proved THEN that this physique was more then enough to set world record sprint records. Their is a joke in aviation that if enough thrust is applied to a building, you can make it fly. The same holds true in swimming---apply enough thrust and it WILL FLY! Their are many ways to reach the same goal---and to date none have proven right---or wrong. Sullivan and Bernard are one example of this fact.

I assume that this is a continuation of your tongue-in-cheek comments from the other thread? Nope. Dead serious. His turns are majestic. He's an incredibly thorough trainer, and this is a product of that, not PEDs.

Ande, I'll hazzard a guess here. It's because they are good swimmers. I second the motion even though there are skeptics. Some claim it is a swim suit others say it is by illegal means.
