Racing Suits in Practice?

Is anyone out there besides Ande wearing racing suits in practice? I've never done it before, but was wondering it it's worth the bother to throw an old fastskin on for time periodically or during taper?
  • Alternatively, how many folks go to a meet in their ratty practice suits cause they keep forgetting to order in time? Or, like me, haven't figured out a way to fly that under the financial radar. Here's a tip - never hang an expensive road bike where your significant other sees it daily. It becomes the sole source of reasons why you can't buy that "damn $300 stupid speedo."
  • I think they like the look. In the cycling world I've heard the term "jersey pro". Probably something similar going on here. :D Skip
  • At our practices the swim studs (good-looking, really fast, 20-something-year old guys) where tighter suits underneath the really loose drag suit. The drag suit looks like a gear bag- that meshy, nylon material. They will take off the drag suit if there's a fast swim for time at the end. I only wear one suit, so I won't be taking it off to swim faster! I fear, drag would be far worse!!! :lmao:

Sometimes I'll take off the drag suit for the last couple of sets to either save my times (if I'm slowing) and/or see if I get faster, especially on sprint days. I do own a fastskin brief (was given to me as a gift), but have yet to wear it, other than trying it on, since I'm assuming it won't last long. I've never seen anyone wear one of those fancy racing suits at practice. It is rare to see guys in anything but a typical brief and/or drag suit, and ladies in anything but their usual workout suit. Although at the noon practices I have seen some gals in bikinis to catch some AZ sun....
  • I wear practice suits in races (any and all races leading up to the BIG shave and taper meet). I'd say it's because I'm poor and cheap (I am) but really it's because I fear wrecking the mojo of my racing suit by wearing it in an unrested meet. Now, if I'm this nutty about my magic racing suit at meets, how could I contemplate wearing it at practice???? However, Ande makes a good point about how you have to feel used to the suit. I will have to weigh that against my neuroses...

  • But if you've worn fastskins or technical suits in meets before frequently, don't you already know what they feel like? I've worn my Tyr Aquashift at 2006 IL States, 2006 SCY Nationals, and 2007 IL States. Those are the only times I've ever worn it. I might wear it at IL States again this year... I'm getting a new one I'll save for SCY Nats (maximum mojo). I'm not sure if you really retain the 'feeling' when you only wear it once or twice a year.

I notice it does give me a little more zoom on the turns that I'm not always used to ... What suit are you getting for Nats for maximum mojo?

Another Tyr Aquashift. www.kiefer.com/.../dept.asp But I haven't yet decided between the aeroback and the zip up. Definitely long legs... I've sold my breaststroke soul! :)
  • On an amusing note, the other day, I saw a guy at my pool swim a whole practice with an FS Pro bodyskin. He told me he was a sprinter, and was doing loads of 25s, but still ... A Pro the whole practice?! Hey, in order to BE fast, you have to LOOK fast. And that guy must have LOOKED fast! It's just like the old Saturday Night Live skit, "It's not how you feel, it's how you look. And you look mahhvelous!" I just go an Uglies baggy and I think I may race in it. I like it. I'm so slow, it probably won't matter anyway!
