David Gregg III Memorial Meet

I see a lot of forum members from my general area and am wondering if any of you are going to the meet in Richmond on February 9 and 10. I feel like I almost know some of you even though all I really know about you is whether or not you feel like Dara Torres is doping and what your swimming pet peeves are.
  • Sadly, I will not be swimming in the meet. I broke my foot on Wednesday. I'll still be there to watch the Chris vs. Jeff 400 IM on Saturday and your 500 free. Look for the girl with the boot on her left leg...that's me :)Julie Sorry about the foot! (My son also just broke his foot, must be something in the air.) Glad you're still making it to the meet. I think the 400IM probably won't be as interesting as the 100 fly on Sunday. I am the absolute least of his worries -- tell Jeff that some young stud (Murphy Halasz) is supposed to be at the meet: 47 / 1:44 in the 100/200 fly in college at Indiana...about 3 years ago. Lee Jewell is also swimming the 100 fly and he is a good sprinter (20+ 50 free, 51+ 100 back) so I imagine he'll be pretty fast in the fly. Me, I think I'll just watch the race unfold from about a bodylength back...best seat in the house...
  • One more question. I'm trying to ride with some other swimmers from Lynchburg because I don't want to drive over to Richmond by myself. They are not swimming on Saturday and don't want to leave quite as early as I probably would. Does anyone have an idea of when the 500 might start? I see that it's the last event on Saturday. If I could be in the warm-up lane by 3:00 does that give me enough time to warm up and prepare mentally for my race? T.J.
  • Is there an anticipated end time for Sunday? I'm still SERIOUSLY considering driving down but one of the events I would swim (still adhering to my no breaststroke kick policy) is 50 Back but I would need to leave the meet by 2pm so I'm not sure if that would be possible. If someone swam last year and remembers the approximate time when the meet ended on Sunday, I would appreciate that info. Paul
  • I've relayed your questions to James Wolfle (who has the entries and can run a timeline report). I have the MM file from last year and the timeline I get matches up pretty well with my recollection...which is worth less and less each passing year. Saturday last year we started 2:30pm and finished just after 6pm. This year we are starting at 2pm (1pm warmup). Sunday last year we started at 9am (same as this year) and finished around 1:30pm. If James' answer is substantially different than the above, I'll post it. I hope to see you there!

TJ, I didn't answer your question directly in my previous post. The answer is YES, you should have plenty of time. And there is a separate warmup pool, so you would be set.

Thanks, Chris. I'd love to meet more folks at the meet. Now to negotiate with SWMBO. If you see a guy on Sunday who looks like an NFL Tight End with a confused look in his eyes, that would be me.
  • What a fun meet. I got to meet Paul, Julie and Chris (and watch Chris swim the backstroke:bow:! Paul, with his lovely bruised heel, slipped on the block and cut his big toe, but still managed to swim pretty fast. I also got to see him swim 29.something in the 50 back. I got to watch an epic duel in the 400 IM between Chris and Jeff Roddin (I can't really say much because my backstroke is considerably worse than Chris' breaststroke) and another great race in the 200 IM. I also saw Julie swimming some, sans boot of course. I didn't achieve my biggest goal of breaking 30 for the 50 free. Apparently there is quite a disconnect between my practice stroke and my sprint stroke. I am starting to get the hang of a good catch when I am trying to keep my stroke long, but that hasn't made it to a sprint stroke yet. In all fairness, I did take nearly a second off of my PR in the 50 fr by going 31.65. I also swam my first ever 500 free. Despite slipping on the blocks, cutting my toe and filling my goggles with water, I still swam my predicted seed time of 7:15. I had hoped to go under 7:00, but my first turn was an open turn because I was trying to figure out how to see with goggles half full of water and another one of my turns very nearly missed the wall with only my tippy toes touching the wall. I took 25 seconds off of my 200 br and wound up with a 3:10 (not quite to grudge level with SS). And I took a little over 20 seconds off of my 200 fr by going 2:36. I enjoyed getting to put faces with some of the names and watching friends and fast people swim. I'm looking forward to zones and getting meet more people and hopefully break that elusive 30 second barrier.
  • Great to meet you TJ! It was fun watching you swim and cheering for you! See you at zones, and I WILL be racing at that one. Looking forward to some grudge races I can participate in. Although, it was incredible to watch the swimming this past weekend. I really enjoyed being a spectator for once!!!!!

Good work TJ You'll be surprised what you can do in the 2 months before zones...get to work... Geek will be merciless if you lose to me in a grudge match...
  • Thanks to everyone involved with hosting this meet. The facilities at NOVA are top-notch (how nice to have a warm-up/warm-down pool), the folks running the CTS, S&T, other officials and hospitality really put on a great meet. It was my first master's meet and I had a great time. Thanks again to all involved! Congrats on your first meet! I'm glad you had a good time. What a nice message -- I will pass it on to Nancy Miller, James Wolfle, and the others. My wife and I certainly enjoyed having people over for the social. I've attached the meet results -- they will be posted at www.vaswim.org eventually, but I figure our webmaster must be busy with "real world" stuff. Hope to see you at another meet, Chris
