SCY = what for SCM?

Just wondering if there is a way to calculate SCY times into SCM, or vice versa...? I've not raced SCY since I was a kid...

    www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/.../conversions.asp If you are looking to do something quick, just convert your SCM time to seconds, shift the decimal point one to the left and subtract that from the number of seconds
  • Remember that for long distance freestyle, the distances and number of turns change too, which means that the back of the envelope calculations are a little more difficult: 500 yard freestyle (457.2m/19 turns) 400 meter freestyle (~437.45 yd/15 turns) 1000 yard freestyle (914.4m/39 turns) 800 meter freestyle (~874.89yd/31 turns) 1650 yard freestyle (1508.76m/65 turns) 1500 meter freestyle (~1640.42yd/59 turns) You'll certainly want to use a calculator for these distances! so a 22.98 scm 50 free equals 20.69 SCY? Is that right? It says 20.59 when I use it. That seems about right.

    scy time x 1.11=scm time or scm time / 1.11= scy time is the conversion

    Eventually the shorter pool would have the dive and turn factored in, because as you go towards zero distance you go further in your dive and turn. I think we need a physics or math guy here. billy fanstone

    1in=2.54cm, so 1 yard=0.9144m, or 100yards=91.44m. Assuming swimming at same speed.will take 1/0.9144 =1.094 times as long to swim X metres as X yards, ie about 10 per cent longer. Equivalently, only 0.9144 times as long to swim X yards as X metres, ie about 10 per cent less - which is the shortcut suggested above. More sophisticated conversion tables no doubt allow for the fact that it is harder to keep up the same speed over 100m than 100 yards etc.

    I prefer to just keep separate lists of times for each course and not bother with converting. I developed this preference when coaching some 30 years ago and had a group of swimmers who were unfamiliar with LCM. After each race they had to consult a converter slide rule thingie that someone had brought, as if the LCM times were somehow valid only after conversion to scy with which they were familiar. At the next meet, I banished the converter and told them to just begin creating a new mental data base for LCM times. Of course, if you've never swum any scm for instance, and need a seed time to enter a meet, then you could multiply your scy time by 1.11 and use that. But afterward, I'd recommend just keeping separate lists. Fair enough.... except if I've not raced SCY since I was a kid... just wanted to know... AND THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE!! much appreciated...
