  • On the C Final of the 200 IM, when the flags dropped Erik Scalise did do a couple of off strokes to get out of the flags....the ref in his lane raised his hand and the crowd...including me started booing.....In the end it was all worked out.....I talked to the official who DQ’ed Scalise in the IM. He made the correct call; thankfully the meet referee made the right but incorrect (according to the rules) decision and tore-up the DQ. I didn’t hear any booing on the deck, just a lot of groans and choice words from long time Masters Swimmer and Nationals meet director, Ed Saltzman. Note: while the swimming is great to watch, Ed and his volunteers are doing a terrific job behind the scenes of keeping this meet running smoothly.

So, a question for those math-inclined: I'm assuming that swimmers are allowed the same distance underwater dolphining on starts and turns doing SCY as LCM, then how much different is say, a 200free between LCM and SCY, factoring in more turns and a much shorter distance travelled overall with the underwater allowable expressed as a percentage of the whole?
  • So, Rob, what happened after the heat of the 200 IM where the backstroke flags fell into the water? It looked like one swimmer ran into them and took a couple of freestyle strokes during the breaststroke leg. Did they let him swim the race again? Anna LeaActually 4 or 5 of the swimmers swam through the flags, I didn't see any freestyle and I didn't hear of any DQ's. It was decided that they heat would be reswum after the relays for any swimmer who wanted to go again. In the end, they all said no (some of their coaches had a few more choice words, not appropriate for our civil forum).

The Natalie 50 was awesome....was sitting there with my son and we were talking about how underwater work can win or lose a race.....I am always harping on my High Schoolers about that....and she pulled out an amazing race.....won mainly through awesome underwater work. On the C Final of the 200 IM, when the flags dropped Erik Scalise did do a couple of off strokes to get out of the flags....the ref in his lane raised his hand and the crowd...including me started booing.....In the end it was all worked out.....

Is this on TV? probably not.
  • CW did have 5 in the A Final and just broke the American Record in the 800 Free Relay. Rob, I am totally jealous that you can see the events LIVE. Nadine
  • There was a USMS National Record yesterday at this meet. Robert Margalis broke the Men's 25-29 500 Yard Free Record of 4:26.87 and went 4:19.47 so that is a margin of over 7 seconds. I know he is a 2007 USMS registered member because he was listed as breaking the 1 Hour Swim Record. However, I noticed that he had 5 NV by the 5 SCY records he set last year so maybe he doesn't care if he gets the USMS records. USA Swimming has to measure the pool because of the two American Records that were set so all he has to do is get the Georgia Tech people to help get the USMS Record Application with the timing tapes and officials signitures. I am interested in seeing what Ryan Lochte does today in the 400 IM and see if he can challenge the American Record of Michael Phelps of 3:36.26 which would be about a 2 second drop from his best time. As Kirk said his backstroke looked good and I wonder if he can go under :44.60 and break his own American Record. I was impressed with his 50 Free swim especially after swimming the RACE (200 IM) with all the pressure and hype that went with it. With this kind of speed (19.22) I hope he doesn't scratch the 100 Free and it will be interesting if he can do the same thing against the field that includes Michael Phelps. I saw that Michael Phelps put a reasonable seed time in at :42.43 in the 100 and its unlike the 200 Free where he put a 1:29.84, which is 1.18 seconds faster than what Simon Burnett did at NCAA's when he set the US Open Record. I wonder if he will be the first swimmer to break the 1:30 barrier? Natlie Coughlin suprised a lot of people with the outstanding :21.46 50 Yard Free American Record swim. Kara Lynn Joyce was undefeated in NCAA competiton for 4 years in this event and I believe this is the first time in the SCY format that she lost. I was very impressed with Natalie's turn and if she can hit 2 more like that in the 100 Yard Free, than I see her winning and going :46.6 for another American Record. In a Women's Free race I have never seen that kind of advantage at this level. This was easily equal to the last turn that Phelps did last year in Melbourne in the 200 Meter Free against Hoogie when he broke Thorpe's record by .02 seconds.
