I've only been swimming (trying to swim properly) since January 07. I've just about got my freestyle technique ok, but I don't seem to be swimming very fast. It takes me about 15mins to swim 1.5km in a 50m pool. Can anyone give basic tips on improving speed? Maybe it's as simple as swimming more, I'm currently only swimming two or three times a week, with two of those sessions with a squad (in the speed challenged lane)! Oh, I'm also more of a runner (marathon and shorter long distance runs), and am trying to improve my swimming speed to feel more confident about competing in triathlons. Any advice appreciated.:fish2:
Good luck in Bejing. Kidding aside, you sure about that time?
Regardless,
Try inerval training where you swim fast and then rest at the wall.
A good interval set would doing 100 meters rest 30 seconds. Do this ten times. I think your goal time should be 60 seconds for 100 meters for this set.
OK. That's better.
Do the intervals. do 10x100 and rest 30 seconds. on each one.
Could also try 50's with similar rest. But remember to swim "fast". If you need to rest more to recover, do so. But be sure to swim fast. As you condition, lower the rest.

Thanks very much rtodd, I'll give this a try. Hopefully it will quicken my pace.
"15mins to swim 1.5km in a 50m pool."
I think that's a typo
but if you can do that
we should be getting advice from you
there's maybe 5 or 10 people on the planet who can do that
we need more info about you
put a video of you swimming up on youtube

This is great feedback. I'll ask my Saturdy swim squad coach if he'll mind taping me swim tomorrow, I wouldn't mind seeing also, I'm sure my style's quite bad. Anyway, I tried the 10 x 100m's last night, and managed one 100m in 1min45sec (after a 500m warmup), then needed way more than 30 sec rest, so I just lapped out the rest of my session (non-squad swim). I'll try doing more of these, at least it's an indicator on shorter distances that I can swim faster than one minute laps - this is encouraging. Thanks again!
