Women's Locker Room

Here's a thread for the ladies to discuss anything that relates to women and swimming. For example, feel free to discuss how disgustingly ugly fastskins are, how the "curse" can kill a meet, how suits don't fit, how swimming wrecks your hair, how hormones unhinge you, etc.
  • Oh, you just stepped right into that one, Elaine. It's most definitely related to you approaching official "old fart" status!! :cane: Just kidding!! :D Personally, I haven't seen any change in the thickness of my hair due to chlorine exposure. The only side effect I've noticed is that it tends to lighten my hair. Well, I'm glad you'll be there to help me celebrate! :cane: (Me), :cane:(Deb) The pool I swim in most of the time is saline, however, they do use some chlorine. I'm thinking it may be the cap rubbing and tugging my hair and pulling it out...
  • OK, I'll speak up! Hey, gals, have any of you noticed your hair thinning out from swimming? I know thinning hair is one of those things that can happen as I approach 50, however, it started thinning gradually right after I got back into swimming, two years ago. I wear the freebie latex caps we got at Nationals, because my silicone cap is too hot to wear for training in our 84 degree pool. And, I don't want to go without a cap, because my goggles don't stay on as well without a cap. (Then, there are the pool chemicals...) I'm just wondering if the cap is causing the problem. Or, is it just my, uhhh, advancing age? Cheers, ladies! :cheerleader: P.S. Yes, I shampoo and condition my hair with good-quality products after I swim. Before I swim, I saturate my hair with fresh water, before putting on my cap. Hi Elaine, I noticed after a long hiatus from swimming (about 1 year! Yes I know, BAD me!) That once I got back into the pool, I noticed more hair coming out in my hands as I was washing after swimming. My hair is not necessarily thinning (at least it doesn't look like it is to me) but I also don't brush my hair very thoroughly either. I was wondering if the cap pulling my hair just made the loose strands come out more readily all at one time as opposed to falling out randomly during the course of the day. Just a thought! ;)

Personally, I haven't seen any change in the thickness of my hair due to chlorine exposure. The only side effect I've noticed is that it tends to lighten my hair. Mine lightens up too, and despite my best efforts with condtioner etc it does tend to get brittle in summer with the sun/chlorine combo. I then end up with fluffy ends when enough of it breaks off, then I get it cut! No issues with it thinning though, even though sometimes I wish it would. Must be your age :bolt: Then again, you might be right about the cap. Thinking about it my GTD cap always seemed to have hair in it when I took it off. It only lasted about 6 weeks though, so not long enough to make a difference on my thick mop.

May want to get your hormones checked!

What you might see as thinning could actually be the strands of hair breaking close to the scalp.I've noticed this with my daughter who wears a silicone cap most of the time, but puts her cap on dry hair-the horror!I wear latex caps but wet my hair first and I have the breakage as well. And if it's a significant amount of broken hair you would notice thinning. A solution could be to put a small amount of conditioner through your wet hair, before you put on the cap-or wear a fabric cap, possibly under the latex.

I thought I might mention my hair is very lovely. No end damage and find the #1 or #2 clippers have me looking great.

Actually Elaine, progressive hair thinning is a little-known side effect of participating in USMS Forums. All of the moderators are now totally bald...
  • OK, so do any of you women out there experience the dreaded 'bubble butt' syndrome with certain swimsuits? I have a few that chronically fill with air during a flip turn and hold that bubble while swimming the next 25yds.... only to be released (sometimes) at the other side in one fell----bloooooop! I can only imagine what anyone catching a glimpse of this phenomenon might think! LOL :mooning: Any suggestions for fixing this? or any particular suit styles that work better than others for this? I usually get the grab bag suits, but might be willing to pay full price if I know this wouldn't happen. Sometimes this issue becomes rather distracting to my swimming!
