Funny you should include that in this thread. If you check what was actually said (versus what was claimed in "opinion" pieces), Gore never said he invented the Internet. Kinda proves the point that enough people state their opinion enough times (without clarifying what is fact and what is impression), the truth can get lost in the shuffle. Mattson...it's just a joke "feat." Who cares what Al Gore did (or didn't) the mythical status of it was the whole point...didn't get him the job anyway did it?

As for the alleged "cheesy TV dramas"... When an episode of Walker Texas Ranger was aired in France, the French surrendered to Chuck Norris just to be on the safe side.

The real boost was when a university (I don't remember right now) allowed access to their library system. That made the Net 3D by layering civilians systems on the military backbone. Private business took it from there. From stem cell research to a cure for cancer, its businesses that makes real progress; not governments, especially congress. Voting "yes" to appropiate funds is not the same as creating it. BTW it was a civilian contracted firm that started it for the military.
