Iwannafly, "With the exception of the recent Chinese swimmer and the East Germans back in the day, I haven't heard of a single swimmer getting busted for drugs." Note..... Michelle Smith was the irish woman who spiked her urine sample to evade the drug test. Kicker Vencil was caught several years ago. Rebecca Gusmao from Brazil was nailed for the use of illegal PEDs. Massi Rosolini from Italy was caught for growth hormone. The list goes on......

The article hardly demystified Dara. It raises doubt, a natural thing to do, but it provides no answers. It adds to the mystery....

Funny, I really don't remember Michelle from the '96 games, but she did very well. Kicker won a lawsuit against the supplement company back in '95....has he tested pos again since then?

Um, first off, what difference does it make how good they are? Second, yes they are/were all notable elite swimmers. Massi Rosolino has gold, silver and bronze medals. Smith was a triple gold medalist. Um, because the comparisons here are against "top" swimmers! And doing a little research there is more than meets the eye in some of these.

I guess the other thing to do here is say what one's opinion is of doping in swimming..... My opinion is...get caught knowingly using illegal substances....Lifetime Ban....no exemptions. The USOC, USS, Fina and all of the organizations that deal with this need to put their foot down and stomp these morons for cheating. Set the example and stick to it.

Give me a break, now we are gonna nuance two proven dopers. They are elite calibre with multiple medals. I'll take Janet Evans' opinion any day on this. Nuance what? According to the reports Kicker won his lawsuit against the supplement company for having garbage in their product that wasn't listed. That's why I asked the question...Has he tested POS since? Here is what he said in an interview: 12 Why did you decide to sue the supplement manufacturer, and what was the result? Kicker: The only reason we sued the company was because when I sent the four things I was consuming at the time of my positive test to an independent lab, their results showed the multivitamin was contaminated with three different steroid precursors and at that point, in talking with my lawyer, we thought that was definite grounds to pursue a lawsuit, which we did. After almost fours weeks in court, and two and a half years later, I have some vindication finally, and some good positive press about me. A jury of 12 people found that that company was liable and negligent, and the reason why I had a positive test result was because I consumed the vitamin, and it had the steroid precursors in there that they manufactured.

Interesting article: "Dara Torres, Demystified" by Amanda Schaffer at Slate. This article does a great job of explaining the amino acid thing, and how dumb it is.

Interesting article: "Dara Torres, Demystified" by Amanda Schaffer at Slate. This article has some inaccurate statements in it. Albuteral and formoterol do not "increase lung capacity". They only stop the muscles in the bronchial tubes from seizing up in an asthma attack. A non-asthmatic who took these medications would not experience any benefit. "Inhaled formoterol works like other β2-agonists, causing bronchodilatation by relaxing the smooth muscle in the airway so as to treat the exacerbation of asthma."

Everything I have read indicates that these asthma inhalers will do nothing for those not requiring them. In other words, no increased breathing capacity for those whose breathing capacity is not being hampered by a condition. Why we continue to see these insinuations in articles is not entirely understood.
