A little hint --- Try not to say anything negative about Brian Oldfield where he might hear you.

A little food for thought: There are masters track and field world records in the over 40 division that would make the 2008 US Olympic team. www.masterstrack.com/records.html teamstrannon.wordpress.com/.../ The womens 800 pops out. As do Brian Oldfield and Al Oerter. (Yeah, I know what you're gonna say about the weight guys, but their marks are still very impressive!)
  • As to breastroker's comment about asthma, I don't believe I've ever heard Torres say she has asthma. I've heard her say she was diagnosed but some breathing condition but don't think she's ever said asthma. Am I wrong on this? I have heard that she was diagnosed with asthma, but it was second (or third or fourth) hand information for what that's worth.
  • I'm a fan of Jason Whitlock, he's a good writer, insightful and funny. It's obvious George has not read the article or he'd not be taking this strange tenor. • I know that throwing a discus is different than swimming a 50 or a 100 free, but I found this interesting. Apparently athletes can, and do, retire for extended periods of time and still achieve great things after the age of 40. Oerter retired from athletics after the 1968 Olympics. He did make an attempt to qualify for the American team in 1980 but he finished fourth. He nonetheless set his overall personal record of 69.46 meters (227'10¾") that year at the age of 43. When filming for a TV segment, he unofficially threw about 245 feet (74.67 meters), which would have set a still-standing world record.

No I did not read it all, his first statement is all I wanted to read A white Jewish mother 12 days older than I is the star of the U.S. Olympic swimming trials, and the American media are treating her like she’s Barry Bonds. He is the one adding to any cloud by the way he writes. Racist? You cannot be serious. Did you actually read the column, or did you skim over it since you thought you knew what he was going to say? "Whatever the cause — nature, hard work or chemistry — Torres’ Olympic experience will have a cloud cover...That’s the sports world we live in now — middle-aged women are not immune. There’s no solution for the cynicism. Torres can pass every drug test. We still won’t believe...The whole thing is sad. All of our superheroes are fictional characters now. Even the real ones, the Pat Tillmans, we sully their reputations with lies and exaggerations. It’s safer to believe in Rocky Balboa, Hancock and Santa Claus...That’s progress. Seriously."

There is a saying - Don't believe anything you read or hear and only half of what you see.
