A French Cyclist’s Long Ride

Anyone who has marveled at 41-year-old Dara Torres’s longevity in swimming should also consider the French cyclist Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli, who — two months shy of her 50th birthday — will compete in Beijing in her seventh consecutive Olympics.
She has won 1,000 races, 13 world championships and 4 Olympic medals. This summer, she dominated the French championships to capture the 53rd, 54th and 55th national titles of her career. Since 1984, she has not missed an Olympics.
“I could have been in Moscow, too, but women’s cycling wasn’t in the Olympics then,” she said in a telephone interview from her home in the French Alps, near Grenoble. Longo-Ciprelli attributes her longevity to healthy living and wise planning.....
