You are so right Japan knocked out the best swimmers the USA had in the 30s, The netherlands have always been a powerhouse.
I knew Peter Mingie he was a pretty good backstroker. In my search for his results I came across this www.swimming.ca/.../Media Guide-Beijing Olympics-web.pdf
I found it pretty interesting although not related to the thread. It Gives a complete history of Canada's swimming at the Olympics. It has a couple of errors that I found - it has me swimming in the 1952 Olympics, I did not. It has left my name off the team for the 1956 Team I was there. It goes to show mistakes can be made.
