Syd I understand what you're saying about being nice or being silent but I don't agree with it.
Since when does free speech entail responsibilty on us? The protection/responsibility lies in the slander, libel and incitement laws.
I recall the story of a (holocaust survivor) Jewish attorney that defended some neo-nazi's and faced huge abuse from all sections of the community. His quote to explain why he did it "Who better than me to know about having rights taken away..." or something along those lines. He defended them on principle of "Rights" not because he thought they were great guys.
Free speech and right to assembly give us all a platform, whether its racist rhetoric or "I have a Dream." You can't have the Yin without the Yang.
