Swiminfo.com has released a post saying that Amanda Beard will be on the cover of the July issue for Playboy. How do you think this will effect her image among the swimming communties? Will any of us purchase this issue because of her?

  • No...she's not concerned. She is obviously cashing in on her celebrity status while she can. But, as the mother of 2 girls...I am very concerned. The funny thing is that both my daughters...without me saying anything... don't think real highly of Amanda. They have both called her a "skank" because of some of the choices she has made in the past. Maybe I'm old fashioned...but I think our Olympic athletes should be held to a higher standard. I'm not telling Mini-Fort either. I hope she doesn't find out, but she may. Amanda was her very first idol. She still thinks of her as the little girl with the teddy bear that grew up to reclaim gold. Even for the most tolerant, it's a bit difficult to explain her choice to a daughter. You don't want to jump up and down and endorse posing nude in a men's magazine. I don't think that's what most of us want for our daughters, or it's not what we want them to want. And if you say Amanda "did it for the money," well that's not the best message either. We don't need our daughters auditioning for The Bachelor next. Let's have some other goals that involve the brain. I wish it had not been reported in Swimming World. It has nothing whatsoever to do with swimming. I'm not saying that I think it's bad behavior, and I'm certainly not overly hung up on nudity as a constant swim suit wearer, and I'm happy for Amanda to go for it. But I guess I'm in agreement with Matt and Geek on the kid front. I don't think she's classically beautiful either, Donna, but she takes good pictures. And everything you see in magazine is airbrushed and touched up anyway. When I pose in the masters athlete issue of SI, I hope they make my legs longers and my shoulders narrower.
