FINA Breastroke Question

So, I watched some of the Australia meet events tonight and I have a question concerning breastroke. I watched in slow-mo about 10 times and I swear the breastrokers are taking two dolphin kicks on the dive entry before the now-legal one big dolphin kick. Is this now legal also, the two small little dolphin kicks?
  • Geek there was one guy that took two then did his pull out with a dolphin kick, it's WAY out of hand ...

Is this now legal also, the two small little dolphin kicks? I noticed that too. I think that the extra kick may just be a side effect of the dive...or at least that's how they want it to look. It looked like their hands hit and they kicked into the water. But since no officials have said anything about it yet, I guess it's legal.

We can see it clearly with benefit of underwater cameras, yet is difficult for judges on deck to see (withou doubt) these kicks which are masked from above by the entry bubbles. Of course it would be straitforward for a meet of this stature and the Olys to have underwater judging cameras.
  • Need I remind folks that the breaststroke kick was legal in the butterfly within FINA, including the kids - e.g. Michael Phelps et al, until just a few years ago. So the legacy from a global perspective of "still" allowing the breaststroke kick in masters is quite short. Leo
  • Maybe there would be less dolphin kicking in breaststroke if the 15 meter rule that applies to free/back/fly applied to breaststroke as well. Or make the distance even shorter so, by definition, breaststrokers couldn't add the extra dolphin kicks without going too far. Otherwise, I agree with Lindsay. Let's use the webcams to enforce a clearly written rule that is being violated with impunity.
  • While technology is a good answer, it presents problems. Do you not accept a record if the camera shorted out just before the last turn? How about someone coming out of nowhere to break the record and you didn't think to have them there. What about qualifying meets? Do the cameras have to be there in order for the times to count? How about a qualifying meet for a qualifying meet? While it may seem like a simple solution, it is not simply implemented. (I am not even considering masters here BTW.) Leo
  • Leo: I'm sure it would not be easy to implement. Egad. But is there any thought to moving in this direction? At least for big meets. Otherwise, we have blatant cheating at a world championship? I like SS's idea above of "random camera testing" for other meets. Kyra: I'm not that worried about a rule making it "harder" on breaststrokers. Is it supposed to be "easier?" I didn't think so. I was suggesting something that, if cameras aren't an option, would put the hurt on the cheater dolphin kicks. (And why should breaststrokers be allowed to go further than the 15 meters alloted other strokers anyway?) It just seems manifestly unfair that some cheating breaststrokers completely ignore rules while other swimmers comply with all the rules because violations can be more easily detected or they just play fair. Pretty big loophole here. I mean, I'd like to do one handed turns on fly or flip over on my stomach in the 100 IM on the back-*** turn rather than learning the correct rollover flip ...
  • Maybe???if the kick is on entry it could be a "legitimate" part of the start. 2 kicks is just cheating. The fact the judges can't/won't call it doesn't make it right. Paul, please stop sniping at *** or I'll have to go back to calling long axis the Axis of Evil":thhbbb: :thhbbb: :thhbbb: I think there should be no dolphin in breaststroke. I'd be OK with a rule change to allow one to swim the first 15 M each length underwater BREASTSTROKE.
  • Paul Smith- Don't you have some healing to do or something?! This thread did not say "big guy sprinter stud FINA question"- beat it ;)
