I'm going to be attending the Maryland Masters Winter Meet next weekend and its going to be my first masters meet. I'm swimming 50 free, 100 free, 50breast, 100 breat, 50 fly, 100 fly. I'm not sure how im going to do but Im hoping for a few top times and I really want to get a masters top 10 time. I'm also going to try to posible get some virginia LMSC records for the 18-24 divison. The record for the 50 free is 21.45, for the 100 free its 49.89, and for 50 fly its 24.71. My top times are 21.83, 50.00, 24.59. So I got a chance at thoes records.
I have a few questions about the meet since its my first time. Do I need to check in when i get there? How are the heats set up, is it base purly off of times or do they group the agegroups together in the same heat?

hey we're swimming teh same events:-D well some of them...im not doing the breasts and I have some other events scattered in there.
The events are seeded just by times, fastest heats going first. All the age groups and genders from what I understand are grouped together.
I will not be in your heats. ha
Warren:
In our neck of the woods, except for Zones, almost all masters meets are seeded by time, with men and women swimming together, slowest to fastest. Some of the longer events may be deck seeded, but you don't have to worry about that!
When you arrive at the meet, there's usually a table at the entrance to the pool or inside the pool. The meet director will be sitting there with a list of names. You just check in with them and they will give you a psych sheet so you'll know what heat and lane you're in. Then just show up at the blocks at the right time.
If you have a question about the meet or the timeline or something, just email the meet director. They're usually very nice. I've done that before when I wanted to crash a meet late and skip warm up. Also, I've even changed my events or times with the meet director before a meet and before the psych sheets are done. They're usually very accomodating.
Sorry I couldn't be at the meet. I will be hanging out at the Prince George's Sports Complex in MD instead.
Good Luck!!
For my first masters meet, there was an email address of the meet director provided with the meet information so I just sent an email to that person who answered all of my questions.
Then when I got to the meet, I found him and introduced myself and made my first friend!
You will find that everyone is friendly and helpful, so even if you can't find the meet director, someone will have the answers for you.
Also, you may want to post a message on the local LMSC forum for general advice.
Good luck - hope you hit your PB!
yeah hopfully I do good. Im trying a new taper so hopfully that doesnt screw me over. I did a 50 fly(scm) today in practice off the side because there are no blocks and I got a 27 high or 28 low. Its hard to time yourself because you have to look up at the clock right when you touch but its somewhere in that range. That converts to a 25 low in yards.
Usually...check in is required for the distance events and 400 IM only. But it's a good idea to ask. Those events are not always pre-seeded... and they need to get a head count.
And to answer your question...most meets have the heats done by time unless it's Nationals. (I may be wrong.) But the likelihood of having that many competitors which would require breaking them into various age groups may be small.
I have seen the heats done by gender though...and again this depends on the size of the meet. Either way...with those fast times...expect to be seeded next to a fellow speed demon of the same gender (not necessarily the same age.) ;)
Have a great meet.

Warren -
It can differ based on who and how the meet is run, but unless you are being checked in with a team, you should make sure you check in with the meet staff.
Also, alot of smaller meets are run by event regardless of age/sex and the slower heats are run first. The larger the event, the greater the chance that they will split first by sex, then by age.
Good luck to you. Let us know how you do!
had a little pain in my shoulder today, I dont know why.
Ah, that will be "MMS," Or Master's Meet Syndrome.
You can't swim in as a Master unless something hurts. Shoulders, lowerback and neck are the common areas of complaint. Seems like you'll fit right in with us you old codger! ;)
