OK...Here comes a thread for all of you wannabe odds-makers.
Post your thoughts for establishing handicaps for personal challenge races.
Here are a couple of mine:
1. Age credit: basic idea.....the older of the two gets a handicap. (as in chaos vs. muppet) the handicap goes to yours truly.
2. Wetsuit penalty: self explanatory....I heard 10% is a good rule of thumb for this one.
3. Personal bests (within 2 years).....swimmers are handicapped based on their best recent performances. (this could make geek vs. gull II a real nail-biter)

I think there should also be a handicap for weight....Like I get an 0.1 second per 100 handicap for every 10 pounds that I outweigh my male opponents Newmastersswimmer
--not fair!! Muscle weighs more than fat...so maybe your just more muscular...which seems to me would be an advantage?? Gonna have to tweak this handicap system a little more.:p
I think John has pretty much nailed this on an earlier thread:

Posts: 475 Handicap rules for USMS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
I propose USMS adopt handicap measurements to more equitably compare performances in Masters Swimming.
1. Married ...... deduct one tenth per 50
2. Nagging spouse.... deduct two tenths per 50
3. Each child under the age of 10..... deduct one tenth per 50
4. Work more than 40 hours a week..... deduct one tenth per 50
5. House and car payment stress.... deduct on tenth per vehicle two tenths per house.
6. Travel more than 1 day a week.... one tenth per 50
Note: item 6 can help negate item 2.
In addition.... those of us with more manageable lifestyles need to adjust their times as well.
7. Training more than 4,000 a workout ...... add one tenth per 50
8. Training more than 4 days a week....... add one tenth per 50
9. Born independently wealthy..... add 3 tenths per 50

i didn't think any smith (good or evil) would bite on fort's height suggestion.
this seems more like a veiled "whining" post than an actual formula for handicapping, though still rather amusing.
Rich:
Are you insane? After two days of swimming at zones, I will be dead. I will not be doing extra challenge races. I will be sitting in the hot tub. (Dave, the sauna is now over by the rec pool, BTW.) Besides, you don't have to do relays. I just got an email from our "team captain" and it appears I am slated for some. So I will be doing nothing post official races except :drink: to help build my handicap for the next race.
:dedhorse:
Who says no relays? If CONN calls I will answer...unless it's right before my BR events then I may be selective.
David...nothing "veiled" what s ever with John.....I mean Charlie brown....its another sunny day in Colorado with a black cloud following him around...:help:
Hmmm I see he has a new Fastkin. It's a two piece though I guess....
And when he beat me, well, thanks to the Finnish formula, he NEVER truly beat me, because the age adjustment fudge factor invariably gave me the edge!

uhoh, I've been found out! looking for a formula where I will rein supreme...no matter what!:laugh2:
seriously though, I am always looking for ways for the age groupers to compete against each other in practice that take into consideration more factors than just first to the wall.
Out of curiousity I compared the distribution of times for the women's age groups and compared them to the men's distributions, looking for the best match in the first "hump" in the distribution (the center of the first "pack"). These are the matches:
W18-24/M50-54
W25-29/M45-49
W30-34/M50-54
W35-39/M60-64
W40-44/M60-64
W45-49/M60-65
W50-54/M60-65
W55-59/M65-69
The distributions were for the 100m freestyle, for the last couple years of competition in the Canadian results database. I've attached a sample distribution.
"Bring it on Rich Abraham ... cash in hand ... I'm ready for you!!!
The 50 free is only my fourth favorite event however ... Care for a 50 fly or 50 back?
Right. If there are some other 60ish male posters that are supposed to be racing 45 year old women, I'd be happy to oblige unless they're breaststrokers or butterfroggers.
Gee, Paul, I'm not sure you want to take on Mollie with that knee. Do you have any idea how fast she is? Go Mollie, fast PV swimmer. Sorry, Paul, but it's a Sistahood thing."

Oh yeah I know Mollie.....she was dishing on me all during worlds last summer...and I'm ready bad knee or not!!
Fort....you may want to double check Rich's 50 fly times....

Well, I'm sure you deserved the dishing or dissing or whatever she was allegedly doing.
I know Rich's fly times. LOL. That's why I said "Right" real sarcastic like.
But since Pepe le Pew's age group has been so egregiously omitted, I'll take him on in a 50 fly. I think he's on record as saying that he doesn't butterfrog for a 50. I think Poolraat and I already have a 50 fly race on in that "Which poster do you want to race" thread.
I'm going to have to try out Jim Thornton's age handicap calculator so I can see how I'd fare against others ... Maybe I'd actually beat Mollie if given the proper age handicap. Oh, and the 3 kid handicap as well.
Like Mollie I'd be against the Smiths and Ande soon ... unlike Mollie I'm a sprinter, a drop dead sprinter ... I will decline the challenge and call all 3 winners right now. Though it'd be entertaining to race and have them not only be able to get out of the pool before I finish but also to shower and get back to see me hit the wall on the 100 free ...
Handicaps for height, lack thereof, and a penalty for those that are really tall
Tenths for the number of masters classes one is taking (less tenths for undergrad courses)
Also one tenth to all those that swam age group and a tenth for each year
Five tenths for swimming DI in college, 4 for DII, and 3 for DIII ... a whole second if it was at UT, 'Zona, Cal, Stanford, USC, Auburn, Florida, or any other "tier I" school ...

I absolutely refuse to take this handicap, FlyQueen. My college was technically D1, but it was a huge technicality. Puh-lease. Plus, then we have to look at who swam all 4 years and who bagged it due to shoulders like the older FAF Sistas. Plus, I need a deduction for doing way too much engine building in college and AAU that hampers me now. I'm sure I would be much faster if I had been a slacker in my youth. Even fast enough to beat Rich. Wait ... there is one little thing Rich and I have in common. We appear to have been in the same profession for a bit.
