Is Swimming Eating Its PANTS?

I swear.. i just got a new suit less then 3 weeks ago and it is deteriorating faster then an SNL sketch. What to do?! :o
  • Actually I don't yet know how long it (speedo endurance) will last. I got two last March and the only part showing any wear is the stitching. It's starting to change color, but still intact. I was going by what my last coach told me. My experience is polyester suits hold up way, way better. Much longer than twice as long. An added bonus is the color never fades. I've been using my current workout suit exclusively since I bought it at SC Nationals in Ft. Lauderdale (May 2005). It's finally close to retirement. The suit itself is still fine. The weak link seems to be the stitching, which is unraveling. But, heck, hard to complain about getting 1.5-2 years out of a single suit. Here's the kind I use: www.swimoutlet.com/.../1438.htm

Another thing that I do is once I have two worn out suits that are too worn out to be worn alone, I wear them together. They aren't as see through anymore and it creates a lovely drag suit. And the combining the suits brings back some fabric tension that the suits no longer have alone so body parts aren't loose and flopping about. Wear and repeat. I've been known to wear up to four suits at once. Four suits...is that so you can perform a quick costume change between events? You're some sort of swimmer/rock-star personality. :laugh2:

Speedo Endurance. they last for ever.
  • Speedo Endurance suits are great.Mine lasted about a year without fading but then the inner liner disintegrated. Tyr makes a mens nylon brief that also lasts a very long time and is cheaper than the endurance suits.
  • Good to know the Speedo Endurance Suits actually do last a while. But I have been wondering (since before this post) do they "feel funny"? For a clarification, do they feel different enought on from regular lycra suits that you end up pulling and tugging and uncomfortable in it for at least a while?
  • I own about 5 Endurance suits. I get tired of them before they wear out. The only difference in feel from lycra is that Endurance are slightly less stretchy. I buy in my regular size, they don't change size or stretch over time. Whoever invented Endurance at Speedo deserves the Nobel Prize.
  • But I have been wondering (since before this post) do they "feel funny"? Since they don't stretch as much as lycra there is a different feel. I buy my jammers 1 size larger than the lycra and then I dont have to tug and pull quite as much to get them on.

For a clarification, do they feel different enought on from regular lycra suits that you end up pulling and tugging and uncomfortable in it for at least a while? They have a little less stretch than a lycra suit but I've never been the least bit bothered. I guess they would be less adaptable to variations in body proportions so it would be more important to make sure they fit before buying.

I've been known to wear up to four suits at once. I also double up on suits, tho I've never tried four at once. Gotta be great resistance training! I find that the doubling up is almost unnoticable if I use two of the same kind of suit (i.e. two Tyr, same model or two Speedo, etc.) But that's just me. Maybe I should have some fun and try not only two different types but wildly different colors, like an orange on top of a purple suit or some such. ;) (Hmmm... not ready for this... my lack of speed is already too apparent to onlookers... I like suits with blue/black prints... dark colors fade less, and some blue helps me blend into the water...not!) Just bought a polyester suit, though, and now I'm looking forward to getting past this bug I have so I can try it out!

I've got Nike, Tyr, Speedo (yes, Endurance) all in polyester and have been using the same suits for nearly three+ years now, whereas my previous (and more expensive) lycras and what-nots could almost get me arrested for indecent and public exposure after two to three months of use. And, just BTW, I still have (and occasionally still use) a Polyester suit, made in England and bought in Spain in 1980 Cheers
