In a crazy (and fruitless) attempt to recapture my youth, I do look forward to the holiday break when inevitably we all have at least one set or one practice where our master's coach throws us a doozy set (and we may have a 2 hour practice instead of the usual 1.5 hour practice) - in an attempt to either try and get us in shape or simply have a chuckle or help us justify eating that extra piece of fruitcake.
Does anyone have any crazy/ insanely long and challenging set they would like to share?
I'll start. We had sort of a post thanksgiving distance free set that we just did:
100 FR @ 1:15
200 FR @ 2:30
300 FR @ 3:45
400 FR @ 5:00
500 FR @ 6:15
Three times through. All on 1:15 pace. (Goal is to do eventually make at 1:10 pace).
Total yardage is 4500 for the set.
Has anyone done the 100x100s? And at what pace? I'm sort of interested in trying that.
I dont remember much of the details, but I remember some American U swimmers back 10 years ago would talk about their 50 50's of fly...
5 sets of 10 or something like that... dont remember what the interval was; probably something like :60 cause they knew it was tough, but there were apparently trash cans at each end of the lanes...

I was soooo glad I missed practice that morning!!!! That is a sprinter's nightmare! Way to go for making that interval the whole way through. You are one tough cookie!!

I was so sorry that you were not there that day!! Landon was instrumental in my making that set. He's so long and smooth regardless of what's thrown at him. Every time I would feel myself tightening up, I'd just look over and see how he was swimming and I'd lengthen my stroke and focus on really rotating. I tell you, he's my own personal training video. I attribute my better breaststroke to him (and our coach Kim!)

There's this guy Chris on our master team who would love this set. He's training for the 200 fly right now and always looking for a way to swim more of it in practice. We may have to try and do it. And I'll be sure to include the buckets at the end of the pool - thanks for the warning on that!! :60 sounds plenty fast to me! And NO FINS!
Gotta love the trash cans at the end of the pool. You know its gonna be a good practice when the coach moves the trash bucket away from guard stand closer to edge of pool. That 100,200,300,400,500 is a very popular set which can be modified many ways. Last year I remember doing that as:
1x100 free @1:10
2x200 stroke @2:20
3x300 free @3:30
4x400 IM@5:00
5x500 free @5:50
There was no break in between, you just went one right into the other.
Luckily I am in taper mode right now and will be swimming my big mid season meet this fri/sat/sun. Swimming the 500 free on friday, 100 fly, 200 free, 50 free on Saturday and 200 fly, 200 im and 100 free on Sunday. If I qualify in the top 16 then I will swim at finals in evening. Need to enjoy this because next week training will be hell :-)

Don't laugh Greg. I am printing that set out now. I'm really not sure I can EVER achieve it as it sounds INSANELY challenging. Perhaps I can start out by simply modifying the intervals OR I could try the whole thing free - and just see how far I get. Boy, I hope my coach does not read this forum! She'll get way to many ideas in her head.
:applaud:
I am amzaed you can do this!

Good Luck on your meet this weekend! If you have the time, I'd love to hear what your times are!
Well enjoy that set. It really was not that bad with the exception of the 400IM's. I hate breaststroke and would have much rathered inserted fly in the breaststroke part of it.
This is the link of the uss meet I will be at, psych sheet and results when available.

Thanks again Greg for the link!! Best of luck!!
And like I said, I'll be lucky to make that set all FREESTYLE. Not ready for throwing in the IM. . . yet!
