As I was browsing around for articles on tonights Bengals/Ravens game I ran across this article and this quote.
www.msnbc.msn.com/.../
"I mean, this isn't a soft sport. We don't play chess. This isn't swimming. This isn't one of those kind of sports. It's football. It takes a man to play this game, and to play this game you have to have passion.''
I had to laugh.

ok you've asked for it.
SPORT: Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
If you consider throwing a ball down a lane a physical competitive activity then it is a sport. if you don't it is not.
Yes, you are correct, you are indeed wrong.
How many swimmers can run a sub 5 second 40?
You are correct, you are indeed wrong. Swimmers can run. I would concede that swimmers don't get timed in a lot of 40s. I don't believe that's an actual USATF race distance... It's just some special little fast dash training that football specialists engage in to help with the "nuances" of their sport. (Sorta like us doing 12.5 yard sprints for sprint training.) But I'm quite certain swimmers could hold their own in many other distances. Do football players ever run the mile or a 10K for time? I think that triathletes and aquathloners and even recreational swimmer/runners do ... Whoops, I know you hate triathletes because they're using heart rate monitors to make sure they're getting actual exercise. ;) And don't give me any crap about these guys not actually being "swimmers." Lots of multi-sport folks were/are former/current swimmers.
Oh,football players do 40 plays a game. Lets see at about 5 seconds per play, yes I could see how those fellas must be in prime condition. Im just exhausted thinking about it. So for a hr long game, they are engaged in physical activity for what 6-7 minutes. They practice 4 days a week and do a gamevery weekend for 16, throw in training camp I still see a alot of free time on their hands to sit around. I could be wrong, but Im thinking swimmers train harder and longer than the "ballplayer" sports.
I wish I could swim the 500 or the mile in 100 increments, get a shot of oxygen after each hundred and do another. Its not like those guys are running around whole game non stop in football. Oh, and lets not forget the time outs and all that clock stopage. Would be like doing a mile and halfway thru calling a time out saying, I need a little break.
bowling could be considered a sport, i sure know my forearms are sore the next day if i go bowling for a few hours the night before! :thhbbb:
I guess I should amend my comment...but I won't :thhbbb:
lol
In Football you have to read and react and follow your positions assinment and use teamwork. In swimming you don't have to do any of these. Football and swimming not in in the same category. quote]
So using your definition, singles tennis wouldn't be considered a sport, yet doubles tennis would be?
Im not gonna waste my breath on a response to this because I am a swimmer and already physically drained from this. As for the ball players sweet pimped out SUV, who cares. I chose to get my rewards in life in other ways, not by what kind of car I drive.
I need a nap now, im tired from this activitiy.

both are sports. Singles is a sport mainly becasue it involes reading and reacted to the ball.
wrestleing and boxing are sports to.
Warren, under your definition of sport you are saying track and field, gymnastics and diving are not sports? :dunno:
exactly, these are athletic events not sports. Its not taking anything away from them, they just dont fit in the same category as the sports I talked about.
