How much do you typically vary your workouts and their intensity?
For the most part I'm a short to mid-distance freestyler, and do mainly various sets of 50s, 100s, and 200s. I think I tend to get into phases where I stay in the 70-85% effort level and after awhile start to feel stale. Maybe once every two weeks or so I'll be very tired at the start of the workout, planning to do more mediocre 100s. So I decide to change the workout and do some fast 25s. It usually adds excitement and motivation to put forth more effort. How often should you incorporate fast swimming, say 90% effort and above? I believe part of the problem is the feeling that I need to complete X number of yards in a workout and if I sprint there isn't enough time to get X number of yards in due to the shorter distances and more rest.
That is impressive. What's the fastest interval you've heard of someone making for 10 x 100 yd freestyle? I think in an old thread there was talk of 100 x 100 and they averaged close to one minute. So for 10 x 100, maybe 0:55 secs?? I believe the 1000 record is 8:44 which is averaging 52.4 seconds.

DanSad and Swimmer Lisa:
I have provided that old thread to this discussion.

10 on 55 sec would be fast. I wonder if Ande would be up to try that!
It would be exceptionally fast. That's a 9:10 1000 free with open turns at every 100. Not many people can make that, and I doubt any masters could make it.
George, you up to the challenge?
DanSad:
You must have a real good memory about George explaining this challenge two years ago. In fact I am linking post 243 from Ande's swim blog that goes into this discussion.

eww 100x100's. On my old club team we did that for New Years every year. What a horrible way to bring in the New Year!
