Should coaches teach cheating?

In another thread I read that an unnamed USS coach was teaching using 2 dolphin kicks in breaststroke pullout, sneaking the first one in after the dive (like Kitajima did.) I had previously heard coaches teaching dolphin kick on the pullout before it was legal saying "I'll keep teaching it until they DQ it." What do you all think of this? I think the refs should watch for this and DQ the swimmers of course, but I think the coach should be flogged I don't care how many Olympians the might have trained.
  • Isn't one of the reasons children should participate in sports is to build character? Lainey No, it's to satisfy the unfulfilled sports goals of their parents.
  • I like your juxtaposition of the classic good vs. evil dressed in black and white. Allen vs. Geek, maybe. Although Geek hasn't said exactly how he's cheating yet. But I think some folks are also saying that there may be a gray area where you are not exactly cheating but testing a rule to the max? That's why I was wondering if the breaststroke rule only addresses the pullout and not what happens right after the start before the pullout. I am so lazy, I should just go read my rulebook.
  • Although Geek hasn't said exactly how he's cheating yet. I'm not good enough to even know how to cheat. I just rag on lainey so she'll keep coming back to this free member supported website.
  • I think you must be referring to evil travel soccer parents, not us pure as the driven snow masters swimmers. Is it so bad to be an "evil travel soccer parent"? It must be those other parents. It couldn't be me. After all we are also swimmers.
  • When I played water polo, our coach was the unarmed combat instructor for the Canadian navy ... Well you learn something new every day, Canada does indeed have (un)armed forces. Thanks for increasing my knowledge today, Cruise!!!
  • Yes, Cruise, I am aware, news does eventually make its way to our state.

Maybe Nevada is different than Metro DC where lots of parents are, as Geek puts it, living out their own "unfulfilled dreams" through their kids. Plus, I know some evil travel soccer parents that were swimmers in their youth. They are not masters swimmers now, however, so maybe that explains it. But here's the test: When you play another team, do you know what their record is for the past few years, how many goals they have allowed in the past calendar year and their national ranking? Is so, you may have passed over to the dark side.
  • It IS cheating if you don't get caught,or is Kitajima your hero?
  • Fortress Apparently it is taken a bit more seriously where you are. Here it is mostly for fun. His club will travel up to 400 mi (even the closest is more than 200 mi) to compete and all the boys on his team are doing it to prepare for the HS team next year.
  • you know it's not just limited to soccer, i've seen plenty of crazed, my-kid-is the-best- swimming parents. one of my teammates in particular would cry after every time she got second (even at national meets), and her parents would give her the silent treatment for the trip home. her dad would film each race, and force her to watch it after her postrace warm down so he could tell her what all she did wrong. we all felt so bad for her. hey you parents out there - is it hard to not get caught up in the competition and put too much pressure on your kids? I've seen parents like that. Makes you want to smack them. We are a swimming family, my wife coaches the age group team here and the kids & I swim, but when the kids want to do other sports or just take a break that's their choice.
