The latest threads clearly reveal that the vast majority of masters swimmers wish breaststroke did not exist (except Peter, Allen, Aquafeisty, and a possiblely experimenting SCY freestyler). So why does everyone hate breaststroke?
I'll go first. I hated it when I was young because it was too slow, I never learned how to do it right, and I never learned the wave action because it didn't exist when I was young. I can't seem do get the timing right now. And I have no excuse. Unlike my shoulder, my knees are fully intact. Not sure I have the gumption or time to put in 100,000 yards for a complete overhaul on a stroke I don't swim in meets. But I'd like to be able to fake it in IMs ...

With a good coach who understands breaststroke (usually a breaststroker) almost anyone can swim a nice looking and somewhat fast breaststroke.
Ther are really only two things to remember
1) use a pull ....... kick....... and glide form
2) Pull the heels up to the butt, not stopping yourself with high resistance knees.
A good breaststroker can swim right next to a wall and not kick the wall!:coffee:
What's with the pecs?
Real breaststrokers have great big calves, like diamonds:bow:
Only pro bicyclists have as great a leg muscle group as breaststrokers.

I think this is why Allen is always cross-training on the bike. I prefer to keep my calfs comely by running on the dirt. But mine are obviously not like diamonds or I would be moving along a bit faster in the breaststroke lane.
Ok let's just recall that I danced through my teens, then hit the gym, then got into Football (soccer for the unenlightened). Throughout all of my various activities and seasonal weight swings..I've alwasy considered my calves to be quite, well, awesome. I could be a sock model!
/flexcalves. I know what my avatar is going to be next week now! :joker:
OK, you two sock models, I expect avatars. We can all vote on who has the best calves. I might even put my breaststoke up sometime so we can all have a good laugh. But only if Islandsox and Heather will too.

If I enter this little contest I'll win hands down.
Runner's legs. Nothing more needs to be said.

It'd take 5 minutes to watch my 25, but sure ... I actually have a 100 IM I did awhile back on tape ...

Well said. End of story. Us breaststroke hater/runners can all rest on our running skills. I vote for Poolraat's and Heather's calves sight unseen.
Heather:
I'd watch your 100 IM. Come on, we could at least admire the first 50 and see you in the prom dress. I recently swam a 100 IM SCM as well. Fortunately, it was not taped. The 50 splits were very far apart. But my only goal was to beat my secret nemesis. I took it out really fast and my technique eroded at the end. I was probably thrashing I was so tired. Is that still Kaitlin? I'm guessing it's someone new.

I don't have runner's calfs anymore ... just flyer calfs, which I think are nice, too ...
It's Amy Van Dyken now ... it was actually a practice 100IM, on tape, I'm not sure I could convert online. I'll grab the digital camera and have a coach tape me when we resume practice in a week and a half ... my backstroke isn't pretty either, the only thing I have going for me is the underwater dolphin kick ...

She must have fins on then. I recently read an article about her return from shoulder surgery. She said she couldn't swim much fly anymore and that she had to swim a lot with fins.
Fly calves are nice.
As to the assigned topic, I thought Kristina's comments on how to learn breaststroke on the breakthrough thread were helpful. Not sure it would entirely help overcome the hate factor, but she advocated using fins to help learn the undulation. I've been trying that lately. Not sure it helps, but it sure is fun.
Richjb is a fin hater too. Can you believe it? Otherwise, such a nice guy ...
SCYFreestyler:
Apparently so. Do you have good calves too? I know you don't hate breaststroke. Why do you think everyone else hates it? That's what the thread is really about. I've decided I wouldn't hate it as much if I did it with fins like Kristina suggested.
Has this become a thread to describe you most attractive body parts?
The funniest part being I'm normally incredibly modest ... as just to reiterate, I don't think I look like Natalie Coughlin, she is far cuter, I don't have fabulous runner's calfs and I have a huge back and no chest ...

See, SCY, my baby sister looks just like me. I'm so proud of her.
