Why do most masters swimmers hate breaststroke?

The latest threads clearly reveal that the vast majority of masters swimmers wish breaststroke did not exist (except Peter, Allen, Aquafeisty, and a possiblely experimenting SCY freestyler). So why does everyone hate breaststroke? I'll go first. I hated it when I was young because it was too slow, I never learned how to do it right, and I never learned the wave action because it didn't exist when I was young. I can't seem do get the timing right now. And I have no excuse. Unlike my shoulder, my knees are fully intact. Not sure I have the gumption or time to put in 100,000 yards for a complete overhaul on a stroke I don't swim in meets. But I'd like to be able to fake it in IMs ...

  • I don't have runner's calfs anymore ... just flyer calfs, which I think are nice, too ... It's Amy Van Dyken now ... it was actually a practice 100IM, on tape, I'm not sure I could convert online. I'll grab the digital camera and have a coach tape me when we resume practice in a week and a half ... my backstroke isn't pretty either, the only thing I have going for me is the underwater dolphin kick ... She must have fins on then. I recently read an article about her return from shoulder surgery. She said she couldn't swim much fly anymore and that she had to swim a lot with fins. Fly calves are nice. As to the assigned topic, I thought Kristina's comments on how to learn breaststroke on the breakthrough thread were helpful. Not sure it would entirely help overcome the hate factor, but she advocated using fins to help learn the undulation. I've been trying that lately. Not sure it helps, but it sure is fun. Richjb is a fin hater too. Can you believe it? Otherwise, such a nice guy ... SCYFreestyler: Apparently so. Do you have good calves too? I know you don't hate breaststroke. Why do you think everyone else hates it? That's what the thread is really about. I've decided I wouldn't hate it as much if I did it with fins like Kristina suggested.
