You are the Rules Dictator

Simple. You have absolute power to change any technique rules, start/finish rules, age up rules, sky is the limit as long as the rules pertain to swimming. What would you change and why?
  • Hey, no one said anything about women giving up their fastskins. Is this a sexist website? I'd give up my bodyskin if everyone else would. The legs on mine are too darn long. And are we supposed to wearing those long things on breaststroke? I guess only Peter and Allen can answer that. Everyone else seems to despise it. And what is the correct type of fastskin for an IM? George: Is owning and buying several fastskins a "talent" or it is a "developed" item like fast twitch muscles? I can't have a suit on my legs when I swim breaststroke, so I go for a regular suit for IM. IT bubbles oddly on breaststroke otherwise. Alison, how short are you? The legs on mine are fine and I'm 5'2"

On the other hand if drafting is Ok, then the rules need to reflect that. Current rule enforcement is pretty stupid. USMS wisely elected to stay out of the whole drafitng matter. Drafting SHOULD be legal. Part of the fun of an open water swim is the tactics of trying to draft and trying to ditch someone who is drafting off you. (And kicking them if they touch your toes too many times.)It might also encourage some attempts at breakaways a la cycling. -LBJ

  • For *** you definitely don't want a suit that goes below your knees. Hansen and Kitajima both wear jammers. For IM I think it depends on your strong strokes. The leg suit help all the strokes but breaststroke and helps the breaststroke pullout. If your breaststroke kick is weak anyway a leg suit is probably best but if your breaststroke kick is good you want a shorter suit.

I agree with Allen. I would take it further though:for breastroke, unless the thigh element fits you well enough to give you a meaningful compression (without cutting circulation, though), you're better off au natural (whoa, don't get excited, I mean a regular lycra suit).
  • Men 800 free in the Olympics, and women 1500. I think 50 of each stroke would be fun, too I'd add a dolphin kick on back (or front as an event)

Add 25 as a distance in all strokes for short course. :D
  • Enough with the breaststroke. How about a minimum 6 persons per lane in races, that would get the open water swimmers into the pools. Tag team full contact 200 butterfly? In the nude? Mixed sexes? You could sell DVDs of every race and no one would care about times.

    2. No more 1500/800 meters or 1650/1000 yards. If your swimming that long it may aswell be open water. #$@$^#$ ADHD sprinters... 1) Women get a 1500 in Olympics. 2) 25 km open water added to Olympics, not just the 10 km. 3) Addition of a swim "decathlon" - 10 events (including a 1500 free and the 50 free, BTW) done over 2 days with the overall winner determined by the average percentage of their time for each event as compared to the world record. 4) Just for sadistic kicks, add a 1500 fly. -LBJ
