Worlds at Stanfofd - It's not how fast you go but how good you look

I may be growing old, thin and feeble, but it seemed to me that there were a HELL of a lot of really big beefy middle aged dudes swimming at the meet at Stanford. I was sitting in the clerk of course for the 50 and 100 free thinking I weigh about 20-40 lbs less than most of these guys. I'm tellin' yah some of these guys chests were HUGE with big guns to match! I felt like a friggen squirrel in a Rotweiller cage. Saeger and I were glad it wasn't tag team wrestling. We'd of had our arms and legs ripped off. I'm thinking my standard formula of vitamins, protein powder and motrin may be out of date. After all, the cardinal rule of Masters Swimming.................. It's not how fast you go....... It's how good you look..... :-) John Smith

I may have garbled a news item very slightly, but it seems that the Smith Brothers have been prevented from taking part in the Synchro at Masters Worlds (Duet- Team Tyr) by some FINA ruling...

I tell yah, Metello (on the Italian's relay) is a pretty big dude. He's got some mean looking tattoos on his arms as well. I wouldn't want to cross him in a water polo game. John Smith

And, since a picture is worth a thousand word, here's a photo of the DDS relay team, which we call the "FANTSTICI QUATTRO"!!

Unfortunately, we didn't get to talk to the Italians that much other than a quick nod in the clerk of course. They seemed like a good group and were freindly. Perhaps we will have a rematch some day in Italy. I know my wife Tori would enjoy the trip. FYI...... there will be no PR photos of Team TYR published with our small chests, soft underbellies and scrawny arms exposed. We admit defeat on the machismo front. John Smith
  • On a similar note, I'm curious how many swimmers wore body suits? Would anyone venture a guess on the %? From what I've seen of the pictures it looks pretty high.

There's no testing in masters swimming. I did drink a Starbucks double shot and half a Jolt before the 50 free. I was wired ! Susan Vonder Lippe said I reminded her of the squirrel on the movie "Over the Hedge". I almost stopped time..... :-) John Smith
