Dispatches from the Front (worlds)

Many of the forum regulars seem to be going to Stanford, alas, others of us will not be there. Some of you that are going will access the internet while there, however briefly- why not share? I have created this thread so you can report on the sights, sounds, swims, sunburns, socials etc. It matters not whether you be 'elite', 'newbie' or whatever, your impressions would be interesting to read. You could comment on great swims, technique, facilities, judging, the announcer, outrageous behavior of other forum participants, complaints, kudos- whatever. If you do, I at least would be grateful and if the thread garners much in the way of postings it could be a valuable archive for people to check for future Worlds. I lay down the guantlet...

  • Originally posted by dorothyrde I saw quite a few DQ's for the relays changing swimmer's orders. I know that it is in the rules, and we have discussed this here, but was there any extra warnings for them not to do this? That is such a hard thing to catch if you don't know the swimmers, were they specifically asking the names? We were one of the teams DQed for swimming a relay out of order. Officials were checking names and order in the marshalling area, and at the blocks. Swimmer were (are) required to have meet credentials at all times. The organizing folks wanted our relay entries in very early, so we had to create relays with swimmers we thought were going to Worlds. We originally sumitted 28 relays with the expectation that we would not swim them all (we swam 15), but would at least have relays for those who wanted to swim. Almost a month later we got info on our entry problems, and we're asked to correct, or make changes to swim order or participant, and re-submit by Monday the day before relays by 1:00 PM. I turned mine in on Sunday at 9:00 AM. When the heat sheets were examined we found that many of our relays were posted as originally sent in, in spite of the fact that we had made changes to swimmers and order on most of our relays. On talking with coaches I found this to be the case for many teams. The officials did their job, many of us did not get the chance to. Am I angry? Not really. The relay folks were deluged with complaints on Tuesday morning and any emotion I could produce I figured would be better spent on my swimmers. I hope there's a way to make sure this doesn't happen on this scale again, too bad we couldn't do it like we do at a National meet, and deck seed them once we know who's at the event. On a side not, I think it's a mistake to assume that every relay DQed for swimming out of order or with the wrong swimmers was an attempt to cheat. In some cases it was swim with who you've got or sit that relay out. See Ya Brian
